Dobbs Ferry Police Beat: Sticky Fingers in Church Kitty; Many Celebrate 'High' Holidays

Illegal drug possession was popular this week in Dobbs.

Dec. 20:

  • At around midnight, officers stopped a vehicle with three passengers on Washington Avenue for failing to display a front license plate. Police detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the car—eventually finding marijuana, two cases of beer in plain view and multiple smoking devices. All three occupants of the vehicle were arrested. Michael Rae, 19, of Bethpage, NY was charged with possession of a fake ID, a D Felony. Michael Cashman, 19, of Bethpage, NY was charged with possession of a fake ID, unlawful possession of marijuana and underage possession of alcohol, one a D Felony and the others violations. The third passenger, also 19, was charged with underage possession of alcohol, a violation.  All three were processed at DF Police headquarters and released. They are expected to appear in Dobbs Ferry court on Jan. 19.

Dec. 21:

Dec. 22:

  • At 1:17 a.m., patrol officers Michael Hamborsky and Michael Huffman came across a car parked on Deerfoot Lane with three occupants. Approaching the vehicle, they detected a strong odor of marijuana and found the drug in plain sight in the car. Nine small ziploc bags of pot were found in the driver's side door; police also found a grinder and smoking pipe. However, no marijuana was burning in the car at the time. The operator of the vehicle—a 19-year-old former resident, who now lives in Cortlandt Manor—  was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. The other two passengers, 18-year-old Dobbs Ferry residents, were not charged.
  • While processing the pot-smokers above, Hamborsky and Huffman got a call about an accident with injuries on Broadway. They arrived to find 24-year-old resident Danielle Colon lying next to her 2009 Nissan. She was not ejected from the vehicle, police said; but officers immediately suspected that she was intoxicated. According to police reports, while traveling north on Broadway, Colon lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a stone wall, also striking a parked car. Police detected an odor of alcohol on her breath and said her speech was slurred. Colon was transported via Dobbs Ferry ambulance to the Dobbs Ferry Pavillion of St. John's Riverside Hospital, where she agreed to chemical testing. Officers found a bottle of white pills prescribed to the defendant, which also contained two orange pills, they determined to be un-prescribedValium. Colon was charged with DWI and criminal possession of a controlled substance. She was released from the hospital.
  • Sometime between the night of Dec. 21 and the following morning, someone entered an unlocked 2006 Ford van parked on Ashford Avenue. The owner, a 35-year-old, resident said the intruder had rifled through some business papers and stolen the spare key to the vehicle. The van, however, was still there.
  • At 10:30 a.m., an 18-year-old St. Christopher's resident reported an iPod touch—worth $118—stolen from her back pocket. Police have no official suspects, but the victim has a few ideas which she can't substantiate.

Editor's Note: Police Beat does not contain a full list of DF Police activity between the listed dates. Also, Chief Betsy Gelardi strongly recommends all residents lock their car doors, especially at night.
