Hastings Police Beat: Two Burglaries and a Malicious Alarm Pull

Hastings police were busy this week investigating two residential burglaries.

In addition to two homes burglarized on Monday—one on Farragut Avenue and one on Ravensdale—police received a number of other calls of suspicious activity.

Here's a snapshot:

Jan. 28:

  • A resident approached police headquarters to say that there had been five men and one woman in the area of the Hastings Station Cafe near the train station at around 12:30 a.m. The complaintant said that everyone involved in the argument was standing next to a gray, four-door sedan. She said she thought the driver was the lone female. She added that the "woman was being pushed around by the males." They proceeded to walk up to the woman and attempt to intimidate her by saying, "You ain't seen nothing, right?" The resident told police that the vehicle then sped south on Southside Ave. Patrol officers were dispatched byt turned up no vehicle that matched the complaintant's description.
  • At 1:15 a.m. a Main Street resident called to complain that music from the Rainwater Grill was too loud for her to sleep. The owner was notified and lowered the volume.
  • At 9:25 p.m. the police and fire departments were dispatched to the Graham School for an activated fire alarm at Hayden-Young Cottage. Officer Heather Smolenski investigated the incident, determining that it had been the result of a "malicious pull." A 15-year-old student was later arrested for falsely reporting an incident.

Jan. 29:

  • A woman came to police headquarters to report that she'd just been punched in the face by another woman at the Rainwater Grill. The woman showed police that she's sustained a laceration to her inner, top lip and small cuts on her hands and fingers. No arrests have been made at this time, but police are still investigating this case as possible assault. Police believe the teo women knew each other and the altercation was over a man.
  • At noon, a caller on Main Street said she had noticed garbage "scattered about West Main Street" and that she believes businesses in the Stein Lot are responsible for the littering. Police responded and advised the store owners to clean up the mess—which they did.

Jan 30:

  • Two homes were reported burglarized at around 3:30 p.m.—but police believe they occurred earlier in the day and are related. Read more here.

Feb. 1:

  • A Graham School employee reported that a brick had been thrown through a window of an administration building. He said he believed it was broken by a student and would like to pursur criminal charges. The caller said there were no witnesses to the incident, but that it was captured on video. Police are investigating.

Feb. 2:

  • A local contractor called to do some work at the Southside Club had to climb onto the roof of the building to finish the job—and up there he found a suspicious a teenager, about 17 years old, wearing red shorts and a black sweatshirt. When the contractor approached the young man, the teen fled. By the time police were notified, they were unable to locate the apparent trespasser.

Editor's note: Lt. David Dosin is thankful for the high volume of calls his department currently receives reporting suspicious activity; he hopes residents continue to be vigilant. Reach Hastings Police at (914) 478-2344.

Burglaries are down -- Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski. For God sake Hastings when on earth is the news going to reach you? This guy is an empty suit, an insulated, entitled, loaded with enough verbiage for 9 villages, completely out of touch and missing a very important piece of the puzzle. A SPINE.

You too can file a Freedom of Information Request for the stats. Not only the mayor and reporters are privy to the numbers. Tell us what you learn.
