Hastings Police Beat: Yonkers Man Charged with DWI; Owl Statue Takes Flight

A rundown of police activity in Hastings over the last week.

An off-duty Westchester County officer driving through Hastings tipped off Hastings PD to a possible drunk driver driving north on Broadway at around 9:30 p.m. last week, police said.

The driver of the gray, 2003 Hyundai was described as driving recklessly and failing to maintain his lane. Hastings officer Michael Pacheco responded to the call, stopping the driver Glenn Davis, 60,  of Yonkers, and performing field sobriety tests, which the man failed. Davis refused to submit to chemical testing and was thus charged with:

  • DWI (a misdemeanor)
  • Refusing to submit to chemical testing
  • Operating a vehicle without headlamps
  • failing to maintain a single lane

He was processed and released on $200 bail; he returned to Hastings Village Court on Wednesday.

Also this week:

Feb 3:

  • A resident of Hillside Avenue reported water leaking from the street in front of his home. Patrol officers were called and confirmed the observation. United Water representatives were advised and said they were "aware of the situation" and that it's "on our list."
  • At 12:45 p.m. at the Andrus Retirement Community experienced a fire in the dining room. The room was evacuated, and Hastings PD dispatched. Hastings fire officials said the blaze was set by contractors on the roof and had been extinguished.
  • At 7:30 p.m. three female youths with flashlights were reported in the street near 555 Broadway. Patrol was dispatched. "It's a funny story," Lt. David Dosin said. "Apparently it was three teenage girls looking for lost jewelry, but it was reported as attempted larceny."

Feb. 4:

  • A caller reported that his bag was missing from his vehicle, however the bag had been placed on top of the vehicle. Dosin said he had no idea whether the bag had been snatched or if the caller simply drove away with the bag still on the roof of the car. The caller was able to trace his iPad, which had been inside the bag, to somewhere on the Sprain Brook Parkway, but he didn't know whether it was in someone's possession on lying by the side of the road because the caller never called back.
  • At around noon, the owner of soon-to-close Re-find on Spring Street reported that a statue of an owl—valued at $125 and weighing about 40 pounds—had been stolen from the front of the store. The theft occurred sometime between Friday Feb. 3 and Sat. the 4th.

Feb. 6:

  • A taxi company manager called to report that one of his employees was having trouble with a petulant rider, who refused to pay his fare. Patrol was detailed to Main Street; the would-be passenger still refused to pay the fee up-front to Elmsford and called a different company.

Feb. 7:

  • A woman reported that while walking her dog near the tennis courts, two male youths began to throw rocks at her and her dog. The woman called police immediately after returning home, describing the youths as: one black male wearing a gray shirt and one white male with an Afro. She said they appeared to have followed her home. Police canvassed the area without finding anyone.

Feb. 8:

  • A male caller from Florida called to say that he's repeatedly attempted to contact his mother, a Hastings resident, but that his sister, a 52-year-old resident, had blocked the call. Officers checked the residence reassuring the man that his mother was okay. According to Dosin, this is an ongoing family dispute, that results in similar police activity.
  • At around 6 p.m., a caller reported that someone may be in her basement. Police responded, reporting that all was clear.
  • After an investigation of an altercation at the Rainwater Grill last week, a 38 year-old Dobbs Ferry resident was charged with harassment for allegedly striking another woman in the midst of a heated love triangle. She's scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
  • At around 9 p.m. a resident of Burnside Drive reported that her "neighbor's pump hakes her house shake." Dosin said this was an ongoing problem and that the caller was advised of her options. Dosin also said he had no idea what kind of pump this was in reference to.

Feb. 9:

  • A caller reported hitting a parking meter in the Post Office parking lot on Warburton. The driver was issued two summonses and released on the scene. The value of the meter is not yet known.
  • Graffiti was discovered on benches in Zinsser Park. Dosin said the silver spray-paint extended to nearby trees and grass.

Note: this is not a complete report of police activity in Hastings during the listed dates. Also, police continue to implore residents to call 478-2344 if they encounter any suspicious activity.
