Meet Your Market Vendor: Big Girl Baking Co.

Big Girl Baking Co. features artisanal, hand-made baked goods

Big Girl Baking Co. was founded by three sisters Regina, Jody, and Aimee Milano about five years ago when they started to bake for friends and family. The hobby snowballed and became a business, prompting all three to leave behind their jobs in the corporate world. The three sisters do the baking and packaging by themselves.

"We all like to cook," said Regina Milano, showing off some of her favorite desserts and pastries.

Big Girl was at the Dobbs Ferry farmers market last year and has returned for the 2011 season.

Big Girl Baking Co.'s flagship product is its cheesecake, which comes in an individual and large size.  They also have chocolate tortes, lemon tarts, ginger snap cookies (gluten free), and trail mix cookies. They even have breakfast pastries, such as scones and muffins.

The business is based in Yonkers  and "everything is done by hand," Milano said.  "We use truly artisanal ingredients—as many of which as possible are organic."

Their products are hand-made, unlike those from many larger companies.  When asked what her favorite item was Milano replied: "the cheesecake, definitely."

She mentioned that it is her mom's recipe from 60 years ago and is "mousse-y and light, unlike many other cheesecakes."

She also recommended "zapping" the Black Velvet Chocolate Torte for a few seconds and serving it "all gooey and molten." (Editor's note: I tried one last week; it was to-die-for!)

Dobbs Ferry's market is open every summer Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Cedar Street.
