Irvington Man Finds Forged Letter of Reprimand on Car; Cops Seek Writer
Irvington police are investigating a bizarre case of forgery this week involving a handicapped permit, an apparently able-bodied individual and an elaborately-crafted forged note.
An Irvington resident appeared at police headquarters this week with a letter he thought had had been placed on the windshield of his car by parking enforcement, police said.
The lengthy and official-looking document alleged that the man had been misusing a handicapped space on South Astor Street—although he did have an official state-issued handicapped permit.
"But we don't issue any such forms," said Sgt. Michael Foley. "If we see someone abusing handicapped spaces, the only thing we'd do is issue a ticket."
The document stated that "in response to recent complaints" about the driver's abuse of handicapped spaces, he had been summonsed to Irvington Police HQ "by Feb. 28 with medical certification of disability completed by a physician within 14 days of your appearance."
The document ended by saying that "Failure to appear may result in a revocation of the vehicle's handicapped permit."
Creative—but very, very illegal.
"My understanding of this strange situation is that someone believes another individual to be misusing a handicapped permit and drew up this note that was supposedly issued by police," Foley said.
If police are able to identify the person who wrote the note, they would possibly be able to charge him or her with forgery in the second degree, a D Felony.
If anyone else in the village has received a similar form, please contact Irvington police at (914) 591 8080.

competition for spaces at the railroad station has obviously gotten to a new, ridiculously sublime level...

But only in our towns would people stoop to such levels of illegal, yet inspirational, creativity. I foresee a successful future in crime-novel writing for whomever wrote the note.

Whats weird is the person seems to have a permit? If they have a permit how do they know he doesn't have a heart condition or an arthritic knee or hip. I think it is down right wrong for people to do that to someone and then make them go to a police station. Whoever wrote that should be ashamed of themselves. Plus, it's illegal what they did. So weird, what's next people questioning each other about what color their shoes are?
