Rivertowns College Roundup: April 22-26

See what Rivertowns alumni are up to in the college worlds of sports.

  • In their final game of the season, Wooster College dropped its NCAC semi-final game of lacrosse to the Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan, 13-9, as Jake Bernard of Irvington scored one goal on his only shot, and had three turnovers in the finale. His record on the season was ten goals,four assists, thirty-nine shots, twelve ground balls, 19 turnovers, one caused turnover, and  he played penalty free lacrosse. The team had a record of 9-6/4-3.
  • In the 8-1 loss to guests Carleton College on April 25, Andy Catania of Dobbs Ferry and St. Olaf's College dropped his singles math, 6-4,6-2, and then his doubles twosome also were beaten, 8-6. The record is now 5-5/4-3.
  • In a win over Lafayette on Apr. 13th, the Lehigh women's rowing teams did well against the Leopards, with Elizabeth Cornell of Dobbs Ferry stroking for her team. The ladies' shells won nine of their eleven races.
  • In a rescheduled last regular season game with Brandeis University on April 24, Madison Dinaso of Ardsley and Babson College fanned twice in the 6-2 victory. The win gave the Beavers a season record of 27-10/12-4. with the next action on the agenda being the NEWMAC tournament, starting on April 27. She had a .250 batting average, started in eleven of the games, had 40 at bats, scored five runs on ten hits, fanned five times, made 87 putouts at first base, had three assists, and had one error.
  • At FDU-Florham on April 23, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team dropped its fifteenth game without a win, 12-6. with Justin Figueroa of Ardsley having two turnovers in the game.
  • In a home track and field meet with Villanova and Widener on April 23, Nora Howe of Hastings and Haverford, placed sixth out of nine runners in the women's 1,500 race, with a time of 5:24.86.
  • At Alfred University on April 23, the Nazareth College men's tennis team trounced their hosts, 8-1, with Jeremy Mancus of Irvington winning his singles match, 6-1,6-2, while he and his doubles partner blanked the Saxon twosome, 8-0.
  • In a home game on April 24 with Franklin Pierce University, the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team won in ten innings, 4-3. Andrew Pezzuto of Hastings, had one steal and made one miscue at second base, but in the tenth inning, he drew a pass that eventually led to the winning run coming in on a Raven fielder's error. With Mercy as the home opposition on April 26 in a double bill, Andrew had one double in the 9-1 win, scored two runs, one stolen base, and had two runs batted in. In the second game, a 6-2 victory, he batted one for three, while brother Greg Pezzuto scored one run and had two runs batted in. The record is now 29-13/13-10.
  • Gary Riefenhauser of Dobbs Ferry and Purchase College, started on the mound in a game at College on April 23, and pitched two full innings plus to one batter in the third, wherein he gave up three runs on four hits, walked three batters and fanned one. A successor took the loss, with the final score being 13-6, with Riefenhauser not figuring in the won-lost category.
  • In a split with Le Moyne College at home on April 24, Eddie Ritch of Dobbs Ferry and American International College had one hit, a run batted in, fanned twice, and had one putout, three assists, and made on error in the 6-3 loss to the Dolphins. He scored a run, walked and later scored in inning five, and had one assist, plus a sacrifice bunt, and one error in the 6-5 win. On April 26, in a 6-2 loss to Southern Connecticut University, he walked and fanned once apiece, and made two putouts and had one assist at shortstop. The record is now 16-8/7-14.
  • In the first game of a double loss at York College on April 25, third baseman Rita Saad of Irvington and The College of New Rochelle, was hit by a pitch and committed two misplays in the 20-2 losss. 
  • With Salve Regina at home on April 26, Mike Swerdloff of Ardsley and Brandeis University, went the distance in a 2-1 win over their guests, as he gave up one run on five hits, and struck out six batters. His record is now 3-5, and the win broke a ten game winning streak of the Sea Hawks. The Judges' record is now 12-20, while Salve's is 26-8.
