Soon-to-transition Children's Village residents participated in a career day.

Nine brothers from African American fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha came to on Saturday, March 12 to work with boys who are about to transition out of an institutional setting and into the community at large.

Dynamic speakers included Dobbs Ferry resident Fred Quartlebaum, who is recognized as one of the top assistant basketball coaches in the nation, known for his recruiting for St. John’s University. Businessman Jean Jeudy,  also from Dobbs Ferry, coordinated the Career Day.

Officer White of the Dobbs Ferry Police Department spoke about his career and encouraged the boys to think about careers in law enforcement.

Alpha Phi Alpha adopted a student living space—Howard Cottage—a year ago and has attended several events on campus and engaged the boys in many games of basketball as well as motivating them to work hard in school.

Other presentations included diverse careers in areas such as: music, finance and teaching. Presenters stressed academics, character, engagement, good handshakes, asking good questions and other life skills the boys will need to succeed. The boys practiced writing job application forms and then the presenters conducted a group mock interview. Each speaker met with boys individually who were interested in their particular field.
