Career Change: Over 50 & Not Ready To Retire!

Age discrimination is against the law but very hard to prove. With the "worldwide" recession still with us, being over 50 has become more of a challenge. There are seniors who feel a need to dye their hair or hide their age on their resumes. Why do this? They are going to figure out how old you are when they do a background check. Why not figure out ways to generate an income and not be ashamed of the years of wisdom you have gained in life. Consulting has become a very popular option for seniors as more organizations have learn't the hard way, cheap labor may not have the on-the-job experience that is needed. It use to be when you could count on retiring after years of loyal service. Now attorneys are helping companies to figure out ways to get rid of a long-term employee without the liability of having to pay them a pension. Using consultants gives these organizations back their lost talent but does not require them to provide benefits or keep the person on full time. A consultant is used as needed. Being over 50 can be a time to explore your options. You can be a consultant and be in a position to get your own benefits, pay your bills on time, save and even go on vacations. Find a need and fill it. Never stop learning. The more you know, the more you have to offer to sell. I would love to hear from any over 50's that have had to do a "career change" - why did this happen? How are you handling the change and so on...
