Earth Day Events in the Rivertowns

Clean-ups planned this weekend; Deadline for Hastings' poster contest is today.

Dobbs Ferry:

The 3rd Anual Dobbs Ferry clean-up  will be on Sunday, April 22, from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

From Mayor Hartley Connett:

All Village residents are invited to participate and should bring work gloves and a garbage bag. This year the Village is especially pleased for the support of the Dobbs Ferry School District to help promote this community event, as well as The Masters School to organizing a big turn-out of students for the Waterfront Park area. It has been great to see more-and-more kids coming out each year to participate in this environmental event, and we look forward to having even more of you then ever this year. Please come out if you can to help make the environment – the village – a cleaner place.

Kids and Families should plan to meet around the village as follows:

Grades            Place
K-2                  Memorial Park
3-5                  Gould Park
6-8                  Waterfront Park (near the flag pole)
9-12                Middle School / High School

Adults working without children may go to any of the sites.
Following the clean-up, refreshments and pizza will be served at the Library (see below)

Dobbs Ferry Earth Day Celebration & Ribbon Cutting1:15 PM

Following the clean-up, Dobbs Ferry Earth Day activities will then move to a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Dobbs Ferry Public Library, marking the village’s installation of solar panels there and at the Department of Public Works garage.

Dobbs Ferry has taken a leadership role on environmental protection and sustainability. TheEarth Day events allow residents to literally clean up our village while also marking a commitment to a more sustainable future through two substantial installations of solar panels. Dobbs Ferry has adopted a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the use of fossil fuels 20 percent by 2015 for municipal operations. Substantial progress is being made towards this goal through measures including the ongoing replacement of inefficient streetlights with LEDs, and energy efficiency improvements in the library’s lighting and heating and cooling systems. The solar panels will help the Village meet its goal by off-setting some of the electricity used by the library and DPW with electricity generated by the roof-top systems.  Dobsb Ferry is proving that what is good for the environement is also good for the village's financial balance sheet.

Jim Dunn, Superintendent of Public Works, is tracking the energy generation of the system – and has been instrumental in moving the Department’s longer-term capital requirements towards more economical technology and equipment, including hybrid vehicles. The village is proud of the work done by all the members of the DPW and Parks Departments to help the environment and to keep the village clean. The village also recognizes the work of the ad hoc Energy Task Force – chaired by Nina Orville- and all of the volunteers who are helping to make Dobbs Ferry a more sustainable community.
