Friends and Family: Fishing on the Hudson!

Spend time with family and friends aboard the 50' Island Current II and experience what seasoned fishermen up and down the river are calling this year’s striped bass season – in a word – GREAT!

Hudson River striped bass season opened on March 16
and Hudson River fishermen are talking about how this season’s catch is going to be good  - and early – due to the warm winter. Striped bass travel north up the Hudson and other rivers to spawn, or lay their eggs, when water temperatures reach approximately 58 degrees.

Bob Gabrielson, Jr., a Stony Point resident who was one of the last commercial fishermen on the Hudson before he retired three years ago, says, “this is going to be a better
year. We haven’t had winter melt so the water is more brackish. That’s what stripers like. We’ve been catching 20” – 26” striped bass already and the herring are even early – that’s a good sign.” Gabrielson predicts, “The season should peak just around April 10.”
