Historical Society Fundraiser Captures the 70's Vibe

Dobbs Ferry Historical Society's fundraiser a hit among locals.

Laughter emanating from Dobbs Ferry's Mead House could be heard from two blocks away on Saturday, as supporters of the village historical society donned their boldest and most colorful outfits to enjoy an equally colorful 1970's style dinner.

"Starting last year, we've made our annual fundraiser something ambitious, fun and participatory," said Ruth Gastel, chair of the ad hoc "Our 70's Show" committee. "We think history isn't just the American Revolution; it's everything that happened before yesterday."

Recruiting the help of Dobbs Ferry High School students, Historical Society members researched and mapped out a timeline of all the major events that occurred in the village throughout the years.

One member, Anne Hein, even copied advertisements from the 1970's for stores that were in the village at the time—the vast majority of which have long since closed.

Some took the assignment to dress "as you were in the 1970's" more literally than others.

"I was pregnant for most of the 70's," said Sandy Walters, whose pink floral-print dress covered a quite convincing baby bump. "This one will be my fourth. But I have no idea if it's a boy or a girl."

Even the food—from cheese fondu to multi-colored, striped jello molds—was historically accurate.

Members of the "Our 70's Show" committee created a trivia game—emceed by Howard Pobiner dressed a Jimi Hendrix—which guests played in teams by table. And Hastings' musician Matt Turk performed after dinner.

The historical society's annual fundraiser helps raise money to keep the newly renovated Mead House in great condition.

According to Maria Harriss—historical society member and fondu-maker extraordinaire—the quaint yellow house on Elm Street can now be rented for group meetings and events like Sweet 16 parties.

"It takes an entire year to plan these events," Gastel said. "Next year, we'll do something totally different."
