Should the New Hudson River Bridge Be Named for Pete Seeger?

7,518 people agree with Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner about the name for the replacement Tappan Zee Bridge. Some don't.

An online petition to New York state officials, asking them to name the new bridge being built from Nyack to Tarrytown after Pete Seeger, has collected more than 7,000 signatures.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner has been keeping Patch updated on the petition's progress since he first called for the idea on Jan. 30.

Seeger, who died Jan. 27, was deeply involved in the environmental movement to clean up the Hudson River, and was one of the founders of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and the annual music festival named after it.

But there are plenty of Patch commenters who disagree with the proposal.

In response to Feiner's first post about it on Tarrytown Patch, Janet Carroll said she thought that a park would be more appropriate, given Seeger's involvement with Hudson Valley environmental causes.

Meg Wilson said she was tired of the whole renaming bridges thing, citing the rebirth of the Triboro.

Karen Ringen wasn't sure Seeger would be impressed with a bridge that didn't have mass-transit options.

If any bridge is going to be named after Seeger, said Harris Bank, in response to one of Feiner's later posts updating people, it should be the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, since Seeger lived in Beacon. That bridge is already named after someone—Hamilton Fish.

Name the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge after Pete Seeger. That is where is spent most of his life residing there.

the tappan zee bridge should stay with the present name in order to avoid geographical confusion for new people. There is a zee outline on the shore on the Nyack Side which you can observe on a clear day. If the Bridge has to have advertising the new name the funds will have to come from somewhere. so let us keep it the same the Pete Seeger bridge should replace the name of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.

"harris bank February 09, 2014 at 02:38 PM Name the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge after Pete Seeger. That is where is spent most of his life residing there." Just for the record, the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge is already named after a public figure, Hamilton Fish.

Pete Seeger Memorial Bridge is fine with me. He was a communist very briefly, and youthful indiscretions should not be held against him. As to Tom saying Reagan was the worst President ever, that is his opinion, and I think he is wrong. But, Tom has established himself as a shill for the Democrats, so we should not be surprised.
