Weekend Planner: Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival, Juneteenth Parade, Learn-to-Swim

Things to do around the region for your Father's Day weekend.

Truck Day

When/Where:  Saturday, June 16, 10 a.m.-1p.m. in the parking lot of the 

Why Go: If your child likes to climb on trucks this is an event not to be missed. There will be excavators, antique trucks, ambulances, fire engines, and an ice cream van.

Two County Pools Offer Learn-to-Swim Program

When/Where: Saturday, June 16, at 10 a.m., at  in White Plains and at Tibbetts Brook Pool in Yonkers to register.

Why Go: The program offers swimming lessons for all ages and ability levels, from toddlers to senior citizens. Classes will be held during July and August and are conducted according to American Red Cross guidelines.     

The schedule for classes is as follows:   Pre-schoolers ages 3-5: classes meet Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. or from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., and run July 11- August 4; Children ages 6-8: classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., and run July 10- August 2. Children ages 9-12: classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and run July 10- August 2. Adults and teens (13 and up): classes meet Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., and run July 10- August 3.

Price:  Registration fee is $75 and you must register at the pool at which you would like to take classes.

 

Farmer's Market and Big Equipment Day at Muscoot Farm

When/Where:  Sunday, June 17 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at in Somers

Why Go:  First head to the farmer’s market and support local farmers by picking up some fresh produce, meats, cheese, soaps, candles, honey, maple syrup, flowers, fish, and delicious baked goods.

Then from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. for Father's Day, come see the toys the Muscoot Farmer has—from Cab Tractors to Gators and maybe even a couple of antiques.

Price:  Free

 

“Who’s Buried Where? Plotting the Rich History of Old Cemeteries in Cortlandt & Westchester”

When/Where:  Saturday, June 16th, at 2 p.m. at 

Why Go:  Come for an interesting talk by Patrick Raftery, librarian for the Westchester County Historical Society. Sponsored by the Van Cortlandtville Historical Society and illustrated with photographs on the screen, Mr. Raftery will relate and reveal some of the intriguing stories from his three-volume book, “The Cemeteries of Westchester County.” A comprehensive work that details the histories of Westchester’s cemeteries, Mr. Raftery’s books tell many interesting stories about the inhabitants of those cemeteries.

Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival

When/Where:  Saturday, June 16, 11 a, m.-9 p.m. at  in Croton on Hudson

Why Go:  It is the annual music and environmental festival that is held on the banks of the Hudson River.

This year, enjoy such acts as: Ani DiFranco Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Béla Fleck Arlo Guthrie & The Guthrie Family, Dawes Punch Brothers, Deer Tick Balkan, Beat Box Donna, The Buffalo, Peter Yarrow, Joanne Shenandoah, The Klezmatics, Tinariwen, Tom Paxton, Raul Midón, Tom Chapin, Tim O'Brien Aoife O'Donovan (of Crooked Still), David Amram Ollabelle ,Jay Ungar & Molly Mason ,Guy Davis Band, Toshi Reagon & Big Lovely, Melissa Ferrick, Brave Combo, Jill Sobule, Sara Watkins and many more.

Price: Tickets begin at $55 for single-days and $95 for a weekend pass. Clearwater member discounts can be applied. Children 12 and under free with paying adult.

 

'Star Shines at Peekskill Juneteenth' 

When/Where:  Saturday, June 16, at 2 p.m., preceded by a ceremony at Park Street  at 1:30pm, and followed by an extensive lineup of Gospel, Jazz and Hip Hop music at Peekskill‘s Riverfront Green Park from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.  

The parade will kick off on Park Street in front of the church, proceed down Park Street, right onto Broad Street, left onto Main Street, then left onto Nelson Avenue. The parade ends at Central Avenue. Immediately after the parade, the public is invited to attend the Juneteenth Celebration at Peekskill Riverfront Green Park where sixteen different performances are scheduled.

Why Go:  Juneteenth commemorates the day, June 19, 1865, when slaves in Texas found out that they had been freed and is the oldest continuously celebrated African American Holiday commemorating the Emancipation from slavery. Retired Westchester County Board of Legislators Chairwoman Lois Bronz, the first African American and first woman to hold that post, and award-winning actor Michael K. Williams, best known for his outstanding roles in HBO’s The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, are Grand Marshals. There will also be a free fish and chicken fry on Main Street next to Lepore Park in the afternoon.

 

Father's Day Family Outing Concert in White Plains

When/Where:  Sunday, June 17, 7 p.m. at 

Why Go:  Come take part in White Plains' Father's Day Family Outing Concert and treat Dad to a free concert featuring a tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire. The annual Father's Day Concert will be a great family night full of soul.

Price: Free

 

Strawberry Festival in Katonah

When/Where:  Saturday, June 16, 1-4 p.m. at

Why Go: The Katonah United Methodist Church is holding its annual Strawberry Festival. Big plates of strawberry shortcake, ice cream & whipped cream will be the featured attraction. Face painting too. Weather permitting, the festivities will be held on the front lawn in the shade of trees and a tent.  If it rains, the berries will be served up in the Parish Hall behind the church at 44 Edgemont Road. 

Price:  Adults $8.00, Children $5.00
