Film: Another Year

via Irvington Town Hall Theater:

ANOTHER YEAR is a touching and beautifully nuanced drama from England's master of cinematic improvisation, Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Vera Drake, Happy Go Lucky), ANOTHER YEAR covers four seasons as a happily-married middle-aged couple endure other people's problems, enjoy their son's newly-discovered partner, and cope with an unexpected family bereavement. Leigh collaborates once again with British acting heavyweights Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen, and Lesley Manville.

"Arguably Leigh's tautest, most likable effort since Secrets and Lies... Each Leigh film rests heavily on the ensemble chosen, and here the chemistry between thespsdistills pure dramatic magic.” (Leslie Felperin, Variety)

"Not quite every year brings a new Mike Leigh film, but the years that do are blessed with his sympathy, penetrating observation, and instinct for human comedy." (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times)
