This presentation will discuss the evolution of the New York Catholic Protectory, a charity organization established to care for and house destitute children from 1865 to 1938.  This institution was located on the site of today's Parkchester housing development in the Bronx. The practices of the Protectory influenced the emerging field of social work and the development of national policy on child welfare.
