Hastings Friday Night Live Presents 'Summer Kick-Off'

Festival features circus arts, homemade carnival games, giant puppets and fire dancers.

Children walked on a tightrope, played homemade carnival games, danced to the music of Milton and brought giant puppets to life in the latest Friday Night Live celebration.

Members of the Circus Arts Camp in Croton-on-Hudson helped children walk on a practice tightrope and spin plates and a Chinese parasol.

In a puppet show called "The Dragon Goes Shopping," The Puppeteers' Cooperative from Brooklyn recruited young people from the audience to bring the larger-than-life puppets to life.

The evening concluded with a show by the fire-dancing troupe Hubris, which bills itself as "a fun-loving, piratical, licentious, geeky band of fire freaks who seek to entertain and amuse with wickedly creative antics."

Performer Kate Bunting said being a teacher helps her engage the audience.

Their show was a hit with young people. Afterwards, Sabrina Fein, who will soon graduate from Hillside Elementary School, asked Bunting, "How many times did you catch fire before you mastered all the tricks?"

Her answer: "Once is enough."

The next Friday Night Live will be Midsummer Magic on July 8.
