In Photos: Hastings' Friday Night Live Celebrates Art

Shops display the works of local artists, and residents dress up for the Fools' Ball.

Even residents who visited the local beauty salon or bookstore last night found themselves surrounded by the works of local artists, who were on hand to talk about their creations. The "pop-up galleries" were part of  Friday Night Live's Art Walk.

A highlight for children was at Galapagos Books on Main Street, where author Alan Richardson showed them how to make cupcakes that look like lo mein noodles and corn on the cob.

The Art Walk also featured a tour of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation.

The evening culminated with the Fools' Ball, a fundraiser for the Hastings Village Arts Commission. Residents celebrated April Fools Day by donning exotic costumes, many of them homemade.

The ballroom at James V. Harmon Community Center showcased paintings by David Bufano, Susan Cooper, Name Musial, Jim Napierala, Sean Taggart, Tim Ward and David Zung, and projected photography by Barbara Prisament, F. Charles and Jim Metzger.

Cooper also displayed her performance art, channeling her "alter-ego" Edwina, the Victorian time traveler. "I found her in a dream, and she is better than I," she said. "She's better at understanding the chaos in the world."

Friday Night Live returns May 6 for a celebration of dance. For the complete schedule, see the Rivertowns Guide.
