New Exhibit Opens Sunday at Dobbs' Upstream Gallery

Forty-five works of artists Mitchell Goldberg and Cecily Spitzer will be on display at the show, which opens on April 1.

An opening-day reception for artists Mitchell Goldberg and Cecily Spitzer will be held at the Upstream Gallery in Dobbs Ferry on Sunday, April 1, 2012. Their work will be on display from 2 to 5 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. A total of about 45 works by the two artists will be on view. The show concludes on April 22.

Goldberg studied printmaking under Bruce Waldman at The School of Visual Arts in New York City and the use of fused glass as a medium under Doris Hafner for almost ten years.

His collection, called "Connections," includes oil, acrylics, mixed media and collages.  All of his work at the show is framed or painted directly onto a panel and all are ready to hang. Glass pieces come with metal frames. The sizes vary from 18 by 15 inches for smaller etchings to 48 by 36 inches for a large collage.

The prints are hand signed as A/P (for Artist's Proof), and are individualized by changing the combination of colors.

His collection, as a theme, has the repeating of a few core motifs reinterpreted in different media. Some of the designs are abstract or partially abstract.

"Brightly colored glass panels are contrasted with similar designs reinterpreted as etchings printed in blacks and grays," Goldberg said. "Paintings are inspired by collages, and older collages are renewed by being 're-collaged' and paired with images of etchings, forming new collage pieces. Each concept when reinterpreted in a different medium takes on new qualities."

Goldberg grew up in Scarsdale; he graduated from Sarah Lawrence College.

Spitzer, who favors abstracts, works in watercolors and oils. She uses elements of the landscape such as flowers, trees and hills along with cloud formations. "The changing light and colors of the seasons come into play as well," she said.

She grew up in Washington D.C., attended National Cathedral High School, then moved to Baltimore where she attended Roland Park High School: she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, majoring in Art and Art History.

A resident of Bronxville, she has given art lessons to children at Rye Arts Center and other Westchester County art centers. At Sarah Lawrence, she studied under Theodore Rozak.
