'Wayward Santa' John Waters at Music Hall

John Waters will do one show in the NYC area this season at Tarrytown's Music Hall on Monday, Dec. 3, spreading his trademark "yuletide cheer and lunacy" and joined by special guest Kimya Dawson.

The following comes from Robert Johnson of Scenic Presents:

Like a wayward Santa for the Christmas obsessed, John Waters - legendary filmmaker (Pink Flamingos, Hairspray and more) raconteur and author of the bestselling book, Role Models - cruises into town with his sleigh full of sticks and stones spreading yuletide cheer and lunacy with his critically acclaimed one-man show, A John Waters Christmas.

Torn between capitalism and anarchy, Waters feels "Christmas crazy" this year, noting he’s "needy, greedy, horny for presents and filled with an unnatural desire to please."  His rapid-fire monologue explores and explodes the traditional holiday rituals and traditions as he shares his religious fanaticism for Santa Claus - and an unhealthy love of real life holiday horror stories.

Delving into his passion for lunatic exploitation Christmas movies and the unhealthy urge to remake all his own films into seasonal children's classics.

For this special Christmas edition of his show, Waters will be joined by special guest, singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson. Dawson is a Grammy winning, platinum selling singer songwriter most widely known for her work on the JUNO soundtrack and her former band, The Moldy Peaches.

This is the only New York City area show for 2012.

Writes Johnson,  "This is our first show in the area and we are really hoping for a success."

He passed along two promotional images for the image, one from last year and one from this year, and wouldn't you know it, people tend not to post the one with the wounded bunny... "It seems many folks have decided against using the official image this year which is funny because it honestly feels like a joke a kid would make," Johnson said. (And such is Waters' own often childish sense of humor.)

How did Dawson and Waters pair up? "As far as Kimya Dawson goes I know they have worked together in the past but have no idea of how that came about," Johnson said. "Kimya and I have known each other for years so she wrote me and asked if she could join John and he said he would love to have her."

Bjorn Olsson, director of the Music Hall is happy to have her too. And eager to see what's in store. "I think this will be a very interesting show," Olsson said. "He does it every year and it's a huge hit every time."
