Rivertown Parents: School Districts Sharing Resources and Ideas

Ardsley/Dobbs/Hastings/Irvington/Tarrytown: Kick Off Event for "Rivertown Parents" Kick-Off Event Wednesday 10/17/2012, 7:00 PM-9:00 PM, Mercy College Rotunda.......

Ardsley, Dobbs, Hastings, Irvington, Tarrytown, each with its own character, its own gifts, its own special offerings.... Rivertown Parents (comprised of parents, teachers, adminstrators, and students from all of the Rivertowns working with Mercy College) is an organization sure to improve our public schools through cooperation and communication among our Rivertowns.  Learn how to constructively engage teachers/administrators and school boards; how to vet curricula; how to make sure that evidence-based data is used in lieu of "flavor of the month" research marketed by profit-based educational corporations.

Parents, educators, administrators sharing ideas and pooling resources...........get out your datebooks for two events this week.  One is Wednesdsay night, the other is Thursday morning--

1) Save Wednesday Night!....The first Rivertown Parents event is a 7:00 p.m. MEET AND GREET. Representing ARDSLEY, DOBBS, HASTINGS, IRVINGTON, AND TARRYTOWN: all of our local school superintendents will  be "in the house".  At  7:30 PEG TYRE, author of best-seller "The Good School: How Smart Parents Get Their Kids the Education They Deserve" will provide the keynote address to be followed by a town meeting style  Q&A (scheduled to wrap up by 9:00 p.m. don't be surprised if it goes later)  Location: MERCY COLLEGE ROTUNDA, Dobbs Ferry.

2)Thursday Morning Show Up Late to Work, try to drop by "Rivertown Parents Book Club"  at 9:30 a.m.  The Irvington school superintendent (Dr. Kris Harrison) will lead a discussion focussed on PEG TYRE's book (yes, that's the best-selling book described above), as well as continuing the issues raised the night before at Mercy College.  Go to:  Dows Lane Elementary School Conference Room, Irvington.

In the current economic environment--and with all the changes in educational policies and dreaded "unfunded mandates" from Albany and D.C. eating up the resources of our Rivertowns school districts-- it's important to band together across school district borders to brainstorm and share resources. Better schools are better for our communities, our businesses, and our residents -- you don't have to have school age children of your own to know that your property value is inextricably linked to the reputation and quality of your public schools.
