Each week, we're going to share with you a local mom that we think is awesome. We'll ask her some questions and hear about how she manages life with kids in our area. We hope you'll enjoy getting to know some of our neighbors.
Jenifer Ross lives Sleepy Hollow with her husband, Tom Schumacher and their two children, Hudson (11) and Avery (9). She is the founder of W@tercooler, a shared workspace in Tarrytown.
1. How do you balance being a mom and working?
"It's a challenge, but we make it work. With W@tercooler being walking distance from both of my kid's schools, they often come right here after school. They can grab a quick snack and do their homework in the conference room. I'm at the space all the time these days as we are start-up, even in the evenings for workshops, so many times they just hang with me and help out." For her, she finds that an additional bonus is that " she can be at their school for daytime events and the occasional emergency. Work is life and life is work - but it's all good!"
2. We think your business is a great idea and would love to hear more it.
Jenifer founded W@tercooler with her husband, Tom Schumacher. The space is a described as a "hip coworking space located in the heart of historic downtown Tarrytown." W@tercooler opened in June of 2011 and offers "varied workspace options by the hour, day, week, month or year to area freelancers, entrepreneurs, startups, and mobile workers seeking an inspiring, eco-friendly, low-cost, collaborative environment to do their thing." As Jenifer puts it, "at W@tercooler, members have everything they need to run a business, less the hassles! It is also a great venue for events and workshops, offering either a place to host your own meeting, charette, clinic or party, or join in on one of our existing weekly happenings."
For the team at W@tercooler, "the best part about having a coworking space is witnessing all of the daily exchanges - it is a natural environment for networking, idea sharing, and collaboration. Our message on our cards says it all: Lose the commute. Gain a day. Lose the solitude. Get the feedback. Lose the distractions. Make the deadline."
3. When you find time for yourself, what do you enjoy doing locally?
Jenifer enjoys visiting the other villages and "breathing in the small town spirit." You might also find her "popping on the blades, turning on the tunes and skating her heart out up at the Tarrytown Lakes!"
4. What are some of your top things to do around Westchester with your family?
Jenifer has an arts background and grew up in the New York City, so for her "weekends were always about bagel breakfasts and museums." She enjoys spending time with the family at Westchester cultural museums like "Katonah Museum, The Neuberger Museum and The Hudson River Museum (plus a freshly-made bagel from the Bagel Emporium in Tarrytown, or course!)"
5. What is your favorite thing about living in this area?
Jenifer loves "the people and the river." Her description of her town would make many want to come to the area and never leave. To her, "Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow feels like Summer Camp for adults. It is full of energy, creative folks, oodles of culture and recreation, and all summer, SMORES by the campfire. Doesn't get much better."
Anything else you want to share?
Jenifer did want to share that "every Monday, W@tercooler reserves one desk for anyone who is unemployed. We welcome them to come and use the space on us, including all printing, faxing and coffee." A wonderful idea and very generous- we hope you will spread the word too about this unique opportunity.
