Video: Groundbreaking for Super Stop and Shop

New retail area will open in early 2012.

Ground was officially broken on the new Super Stop and Shop development on Route 119 near the Sheraton Hotel on Tuesday morning.

The 67,500-square-foot store, being built by White Hickory Associates L.L.C., will be accompanied by 22,500 feet of retail building space and 50,000 square-feet of office building space. There is a rapid construction timeline for the project, with a ribbon cutting expected sometime in early 2012.

Those who have worked on planning the development, which has been in the making for about five years, said the supermarket would be the start of a radical overhaul of Route 119.

The new complex will be a hub for bus traffic if the proposed Bus Rapid Transit is included in the construction of a new Tappan Zee Bridge. The BRT express bus service will operate from Port Chester to Rockland County and it will include a stop at the supermarket.

"Route 119 is becoming more focused with the coming Tappan Zee Bridge," said commercial developer Robert Weinberg. "This project is advanced thinking."

The new mega-store will replace the current Stop and Shop located at the Bridge Plaza in Tarrytown. That store will become a CVS/pharmacy with an expanded convenience food department. Stop and Shop representatives said that people in the neighborhood near the Bridge Plaza who walk to get groceries would be provided free peapod grocery delivery service until the CVS food option became available.

Tim Mahoney, the Vice President of Stop and Shop's property division said that it was always the case that Stop and Shop would be looking for a larger space to provide grocery services to a wider swath of the population.

"Almost as soon as we got in there (Bridge Plaza), this was the dream," Mahoney said.

Honestly, I was disappointed that it was a CVS moving in to Bridge Plaza. I was really hoping for Trader Joes or Mrs. Greens. Anyone know if there is a tennant lined up for the space where Tarrytown Gourmet was?

This area desperately needs a large, CLEAN supermarket, the Stop & Shop in Tarrytown and the A&P in Hartsdale are a disgrace. I have to drive to White Plains for a decent place to buy food. And what about a Starbucks instead of yet another Dunkin Donuts.

Ignore those persistent rumors that Whole Foods is coming to this neighborhood (as speculated in reader comments for Stop & Shop and other food-related Patch coverage). Whole Foods has three stores in the works for New York but none of them will be in our backyard. Here is what Whole Foods told us: "Regarding Whole Foods Market’s plans for the New York area, our planned stores are a 57th Street location which is slated for opening late next year and a store at 3rd and 3rd in Brooklyn which should open in early 2013. The Yonkers store is slated to open in October of this year. It will be located at the new Ridge Hill complex off Rt. 87 in Yonkers."
