COLLEGE ROUNDUP 2/10-16

         SPOTLIGHT ON : TARA GABELMAN

In yet another sensational performance on the basketball court, Tara Gabelman scored game highs of 19 in points and 15 in rebounds, plus having 3 assists and 4 steals in a 77-65 win over the Williams College Ephs at home on February 14th, while in the season finale and hosting Hamilton on the 15th, she scored 12 points, had a game high of 12 boards and 4 assists. The Camels will face Trinity in post-seasonal play on the 22nd.

Dobbs Ferry's Andrea Abbatiello and the Furman U. Paladines' softball team opened the Spring schedule on February 15th with a double header with Mercer College.

She appeared off the bench in right field late in the first game, which the opposition won, 4-0. After losing the front end of a twin bill at Georgia on the 16th, she played in left field, where she went 0-1, struck out, and made 1 putout in her position. The record thus far is 0-4.

Matthew AdPietro of Hastings and the Cortland State baseball nine, opened the Spring season with a double header against the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan at Virginia Beach on February 16th, and won the opener, 8-3.

Defender Darien Bica of Dobbs Ferry and Manhattan's lacrosse team opened the season on February 5th at Rutgers, and lost to the Scarlet Knights, 11-5. At North Carolina on the 16th, xxx.

Hosting Binghamton on February 12th, New Hampshire lost  in overtime, 72-71, with Jordon Bronner of the Wildcats leading all players in points with19, plus having 4 rebounds and 5 assists in the game, while at Hartford on the 15th, he scored 10 points and had 3 boards and 1 assist in the 61-59 squeaker loss, with the record now 6-19:4-8.

At Gordon February 15th, Salve Regina topped the home forces, 67-49, as Lisa Bucci had 1 rebound, 1 steal, and 1 block in the game, with the record now 12-11:10-6.

In an 83-58 romp over guests UMass-Lowell on February 12th, Sandro Carissimo of Vermont scored 13 points, bus having 1 assist, 1 block, and a game high of 4 steals. Hosting UMBC on the 15th,in the 76-57 win, he had 10 points, 1 board,3 assists, and 3 steals in the game, with the record now 17-9:11-1.

In the penultimate game of the season, forward Allie Coppola of Bates scored 19 points, had a team high of 8 boards, and 4 assists in a home game with Bowdoin, while in the finale with Colby on the 15th,  she had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists in the matinee, with the record now 8-16:1-9.

At Boston U. on February 14th, Sam Ezratty and the Princeton men's squash team topped Bates, 8-1, while on the 15th, they won over Dartmouth, 6-3, as he won (9)9.7 (2),9, and on the 16th, topped his Columbia opponent, 9(6)(5)5.8.

Hosting Middlebury on February, in the final game of the regular season, Amherst topped the Panthers, 79-41, with Marley Giddins scoring 11 points, having 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, and 3 steals in the game. The Lady Jeffs will begin the N.E.S.C.A.C playoffs on the 22nd.

At Princeton on February 14th, the Columbia wrestling team dropped a close 18-16 match to the Tigers, with Penn Gottfried of the Lions winning his 125 pound match, 9-5. On the 15th, at Penn, in the 24-10  loss, he dropped his match, 5-3.

In the swimming championship, held at the U.of Minnesota February 14th, Jesse Gourevitch  of Carleton was 15th in the 200 Individual Medley preliminary, with a time of 1:59.80, and in the 100 Breaststroke was 11th, clocked at 59.72.

In a 4-0  hockey loss at Westfield State, Craig Halpin of Fitchburg State saw the record fall to 9-11-1:6-7-1.

Michael Holdstein of Hastings and Hartford, opened the Spring tennis season on February 6 at Boston College,

where they lost to the Eagles, 7-0, as he dropped his singles match, 6-4,6-3, and his doubles match, 8-6. On the 7th, at Fairfield, they lost to the Stags, 4-0, as he lost his singles match, 6-1,6-2.

AT Ursinus on February 14th, Haverford's track and field team finished 8th of 12th teams, with Nora Howe crossing the finish line 11th in the 1 mile race, with a clocking of 5:51.60 .

Ali Kaminetsky of Lehigh's women's tennis team in a home match with Fairleigh-Dickinson on February 8th, dropped her singles match,8-3, with the team losing to the Knights ,7-0. At home with Towson on the 15th, in the 4-3 loss, she dropped her doubles match,8-6, as well as the singles, 6-1,7-5. On the 16th with Mt. St. Mary xxxx

Michael Kennelly of Irvington and the Oneonta men's tennis team, led off the Spring season on February 15th with matches at Rochester, wherein the Red Dragons were swept by the Yellow Jackets, as he dropped a hard fought singles match 5-7,7-6(7-1)10-8, after which his doubles twosome also lost, 8-5. 

In a 64-49 win at St. Joseph's on February 11th, Brittni Lai of Marist had 4 points, 2 boards, and 2 assists, while at home with Quinnipiac on the 14th, the Red Foxes won, 100-81, as  Lai had 1 basket, 1 rebound, 4 assists, and 3 steals, with the record now at 20-6:14-2.

At home with American U. on February 12th, Lehigh lost to the Eagles, 69-56, with Lexi Martins scoring 5 points, having 4 boards, and 1 block in the game, while at Holy Cross on the 15th, she had 8 points,4 rebounds, and 3 steals, with the record now 11-13:4-9.

At the Draddy Invitational on February 15th, Manhattan's Sarah Moore finished 4th in the women's pole vault with her best height of 10'4".

At the Rider Invitational track meet at the NY Armory on February 14th, Kira Murphy of R.P.I. finished 15th in the women's pole vault, with height of 3.15 meters.

On February 16th at U.Penn-Johnston, Shippensberg's wrestling team were on the short end of a 33-8 score, with Brett Pastore losing his match, 11-0(20-8), as the team's record fell to 6-13:2-44. 

Javier Paulino of Hackley and Amherst, in a track meet at Tufts on February 15th, finished 34th in the 60 dash, with a time of 7.63.

 

Jon Pilla of Ardsley, and senior third sacker for Belmont Abbey and the Knights, after having won 4 games in a row. 

On February 15th, at U.S.C.- Aiken, they lost 7-3, and then on the 16th, dropped a twin bill to the opponents. In game one, Pilla batted 1-2 in the 12-4 loss, and then in the nightcap, he fanned twice in the 5-2 setback.

Toni Pilla of Ardsley and the Caldwell College women's basketball team,in a game with Post on February 11th, the Cougars topped their guests, 77-68, breaking a 3 game losing streak, with the former Panther scoring 11 points,

having 3 boards, and 1 assist in the win. Hosting Goldey Beacon on the 16th, she scored 11 points and had 3 rebounds and 1 assist in the 62-59 win. The record is now

13-10:11-5. 

At Oneonta on February 14th, the New Paltz Hawks' women's basketball team bowed to their hosts,53-46,with Ashley Riefenhauser having 1 rebound in the game, with the record now 5-18-3-13. In men's action, the team lost to Oneonta, 87-75, with Joe Tino having 1 board, with the record now 6-17:3-13.

At the H.V.I.A.C. Championship swim meet at C.N.R. on February 9th, the Blue Angel team finished 3rd with 60 points. Rita Saad's 200 Medley Relay quartet finished 7th in 3:03.72, while she was 8th in the 200 Freestyle, clocked at 3:37.97 and 7th in the 500 Freestyle, with her time of 10:02.60 and her 200 Freestyle foursome were 8th, in 3:26.17.

At Ursinus on February 12th, the Franklin & Marshall boys basketball team lost to their hosts, 61-56, with Jon Salandra having 15 points, a game high of 12 rebounds, plus 2 assists,2 steals, and 4  blocks in the game, while at Muhlenburg on the 15th, he had a game high of 21 points, plus 4 boards and 1 assist,steal,and block apiece.

At home with Johns Hopkins on February 12th, Gettysburg topped the Blue Jays, 64-55, with Mark Siden having 2 points in the game. After a 70-64 win on the 15th, the Bullets have a record of 11-12:9-7.

Running in the Bomber Invitational track meet at Ithaca on February 15th, Brendan Wortner of Geneseo won the 3,000 race with his time of 8:42.24. He out legged 67 other runners in the race.
