COLLEGE ROUNDUP - 11/11-17

         SPOTLIGHT ON: ROBERT SMALL

On November 16, it took 3 overtimes to accomplish the win, but Anna Maria won the squeaker at home, 44-42, with running back Robert Small having 15 carries for 73 yards, and 4 pass receptions for 11, in the final game with Husson.

On the season, the outstanding running back led the team in touchdowns with 15, and carried the ball 189 times for a total of 1,224 yards. He carried for T.D.'s 13 times in 4 years, and had receptions twice.

In an 84-81 nail biter over host Duquesne on November 13th, Jordon Bronner of New Hampshire scored 9 points, had 5 boards, and 2 assists in the win,  while hosting N.J. Tech on November 17, he scored 14 points, had 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal in the game.

Lisa Bucci of Irvington and Salve Regina opened the basketball season on November 15th at home with Southern Maine, and lost,  67-45, while the next day, with Fisher as the opponent at the same location, she scored 4 points, had 1 rebound, and 2 steals in the 72-52 victory.

In a 77-66 win over Siena at home on November 12th,  "Iron Man" Sandro Carissimo once again led his team in on court time with 36 minutes of play,  during which tenure he had 3 field goals, 2 treys, and 4-4 at the foul line, plus having 1 each in assists, turnovers, blocks, and steals in the game . At Bryant of Smithfield, R.I. on November 16th, he had 12 points on 5 baskets and 2-4 at the courtesy line, plus 1 rebound,2 assists, 1 turnover, and 1 block in the 87-64 loss.

Forward Allie Coppola of Irvington and Hackley, launched

the Bates College women's basketball season with Mt. Holyoke on November 15th at the Maine-Maritime tournament, and had 1 rebound in the 77-63 loss, while in the 84-55 win over Simmons, she had 10 point, a game high of 12 rebounds, plus 1 stealing 2 turnovers in th win. 

In the final football game of the season, Sean Degnan and Western New England played at Nichols, and he started at offensive tackle in the 35-21 win. During the season, he started 8 of the Prides' 9 games, and the squad had a record of 6-3:3-3.

In a weekend swim meet at New Paltz on November 16th-17th, Katie Flood and the Oswego Lakers' women's swim team lost to the Red Dragons, 135-65, with the Hastings alumna winning the women's 100 Breaststroke.

In a season opening basketball tourney at Swarthmore the weekend of November 16th and 17th, Senior forward Tara Gabelman of Irvington and Connecticut College had 11 points on 3-10 and 5-5, plus 8 rebounds, 4 steals,1 block,and 4 turnovers in the 63-53 win, while with the hosts on the 17th,

she scored a game high of 12 points on 6 baskets, had 9 rebounds, 1 steal, 4 blocks, and 5 turnovers in the 58-55 loss.

Hockey forward Craig Halpin of Fitchburg State, in a game at Plymouth State on November 14th,  assisted on his team's 1st goal at 02:19, as the Falcons lost, 6-3, while hosting Worcester State on November 16th, he assisted on a goal at 02.12 of the 3rd period, in the 7-3 win.

Ithaca College, in the season finale at home with Cortland, lost to the Red Dragons, 28-24, on a last minute touchdown, with Skyler Griffenberg of the Bombers having 1 solo and 3 tackling assists, in addition to breaking up 1 passing attempt.

 Michael Moreno once again started on the offensive line for Ithaca. They will enter the NCAA playoffs on the 23rd at home with Framingham State.

 Manita Herlitz-Ferguson, of The Masters School and a diver for Cornell, in a  home meet with Ivy League rivals Dartmouth and Princeton on November 16th, finished 4th in the 3 meter diving, with 266.35, and then was 3rd in the 1 meter even, with 258.45 points, as the Big Red won over Dartmouth;,160-140, and over Harvard,191-109.Thus far this season the record is 2-1.

In the NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship at Lehigh on November 16th, both the Johns Hopkins mens' and womens' teams finished first. For the men, Julian Saliani was 10th,with a time of 25.02, while for the women, Abby Flock was 13th, clocked at 21.48. The men had 42 points, while the women had 26. It marked the first time ever that the men had captured the title.

Marist College's Brittni Lai, in a basketball game at SUNY Albany on November 14th, a 69-59 loss, had 1 foul points and 2 turnovers, while at Princeton on November 17th, she had her first start at guard, and scored 7 points on 1 three point goal and 1 field goal, in addition to having 3 boars,4 assists, and 2 turnovers in the 81-58 loss to the tigers. The record is now 0-3.

Hastings' Sarah Madigan of the Haverford women's squash team, in a game at home with Franklin & Marshall on November 16th, lost her singles match 11-3,11-2,11-3, as her team bowed to their guests, 9-0.

Offensive lineman Ali Marpet of Hobart, in the season's last game at Rochester on November 16th, started his 9th game of the undefeated Diplomat's campaign, and the 42-21 win gave the squad a perfect ending to a perfect season. The team will play Gallaudet of D.C. at home in the NCAA Div. 111 opener on November 23rd.

Hosting New Jersey Tech on November 11th,

the Lehigh Mountain Hawks women's basketball five outscored their guests, 77-73, as Lexi Martins scored 10 points, including  3 field goals,1 hit from beyond the circle, and 3 foul points. With the Wildcats of Villanova as the home opposition on November 14th, she scored 7 points on 3 from the floor and 1-2 from the charity line, plus having 7 boards,

1 turnover, 1 block,and 1 steal in the 79-73 overtime loss.

Cara Morris and the Wheaton College women's swim team,

in a meet at Roger Williams on November 15th, lost to their hosts, 176-121, with the junior co-captain and her 200 Freestyle Relay quartet winning their race in 1:41.36, while she was 3rd in the 100 Butterfly, clock at 1:03.64, and 4th in the 100 Freestyle in 57.87. while on the 16th, with Springfield hosting and including Keane State, her 200 Medley Relay foursome were 4th, in 1:55.90, and were 2nd in the 400 Freestyle Relay, with a clocking of 3:4.88, while whe was 8th in the 50 Freestyle, in 26.62, and also 8thin the 100 Butterfly, at 1:04.77. The Lyons lost to Springfield, 214-74, and to Keene State, 225-54.

With Johnson &  Wales finishing 36th of 51 colleges in the NAAC Division 111 New England cross country championship on November 12th, Joann Mumbey was 225th, and clocked at 25.47, in the final race of the season.

At the East Stroudsburg open and non-scoring wrestling matchup on November 17th, Brett Pastore of Shippensburg

pinned a Centenary foe in the 157 pound category, with a time of 3:53, and then did the same to a teammate in 4:52.

In the season's opening game with  Chapman U. at Redlands of California, Ashley Riefenhauser of Dobbs Ferry and New Paltz, scored 11 points on a field goal and 3 treys in the 81-72 loss to the Panthers, plus having 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the game. Facing Redlands on the 16th, she was in the starting lineup and played the full 40 minutes , high for the game, scored 7 points, had 6 rebounds, 3 turnovers, and 1 steal in the 63-40 loss.

Joe Tino of Hastings and the New Paltz men's basketball team opened the season with a game on November 15th against  the Whittier Poets at Redlands, and the Hawks emerged Victorious, 69-66, while on the 16th against Redlands, he saw his initial action of the season as he had 1 rebound in a brief appearance in the game.

In the season home opener with Elizabeth Town on November 16th, Mark Siden of Hastings of Getttysburg played briefly in the 82-55 loss.

Running back Alec Sinatro and the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays ended the regular season with a 52-21 win at McDaniel on November 16th, for a record of 10-0:9-0, and will now move on to NCAA Division 3 playoffs as they host Wesley College on November 23rd.

In a 197-91 loss to the hosting Loyola Greyhounds on November 16th, Tavy Smith of Colgate finished 3rd in the 100 Breast Stroke, timed at 1:02.30, 6th in the 200 Breaststroke, clocked at 2:23.37, and 4th in the 200 Individual Medley, in 2:10.63. At home on the 17th, he catered the 100 Breaststroke in 1:01.12, was 2nd in the 200 Breaststroke in 2:18.30, 7th in the 200 Individual Medley, in 2:13.70, and his 400 Freestyle Relay quartet were 4th in 3:52.32, with the visiting Purple Eagles copping the meet, 180-102.

Morrisville Mustang sophomore running back Kayzon Stovall of Sleepy Hollow and his team dropped the final game of the season to visiting Brockport State, 43-33, as their season ended with a record of 3-7.

At the NCAA 3 Regional Cross Country Championship, Brendan Wortner of Geneseo finished 26th of 275 runners,

with a time of 25:45.2, as his team finished 3rd behind Cortland and N.Y.U. with 101 points.
