Collect Stink Bugs for Science

Cornell's Hudson Valley Laboratory wants them and gives tips on how to scoop 'em up.

Science project, anyone? A researcher at the Hudson Valley Laboratory (part of the state agriculture and extension program) has put out a call to Patch readers for stink bugs.

One of the commenters on our about the invasion of the shield-shaped, smelly, ubiquitous insects, Peter Jentsch is their bounty. And he offers a how-to.

Says Jentsch, "We are looking for high populations of adult brown marmorated stink bugs to add to our colonies at the Hudson Valley Laboratory. You can capture them in a empty 3 liter soda bottle by cutting off the spout, flipping it and placing it back into the container, tape the edge and use it to capture them by sliding the edge under the insect. They will fall into the funnel. Add a baby carrot or two and voila.. they cannot escape. We'll pick them up. Thanks...Peter
If you'd like to contribute (>50) please give us a call (846.691.7151)."

If you do, please let us know and share photos of your contributions to science!

Wow, just got rid of one the other day! Will keep this in mind but I only see one or two at a time..

This is a late request as most of us have been battling them all winter and like Karen hopefully have killed them all. Once temps hit 70 they want to go outside and mate. They tend to prefer South side of house and light. Best place to put traps. Why is this guy breeding them??? They are a nuisance to be eradicated. They die in soapy water and when sprayed with Listerine. Death to stink bugs! Science has a higher calling than enabling pests.

I highly doubt they are intending to "enable" them - its part of the state agriculture research. Probably quite the opposite.

We've been inundated with these pests since last fall, but unlike JQP's bugs, mine come in through the east side of my house where it's pretty shady all day. We capture / kill at least a half dozen a day. Is there any known way to eradicate them short of DDT or Chlordane?

This researcher should swing by my place. The woods behind our apartment are a breeding ground for them. We find three or four every day in the house.

There's nothing funny about stink bugs, but this 60 second video about "Stink Bug Yoga" is pretty funny...

FREDBUG 10,000 I live in Highland N.Y. and was in the middle of a remodel during last fall I captured about 8,000 to 10,000 min. Now this spring we are living in that house and catch on average of 30 to 60 every single day for the last month and they keep coming. I started collecting them Yesterday and tried the phone # above with no service to that # ???? F B
