Twelve Years Later, Irvington Remembers 9/11

Residents gathered at the Scenic Hudson Park memorial this morning and vowed to "Never Forget" the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Gathering at the Scenic Hudson Park Sept. 11, 2001 memorial on a sunny morning, members of the Irvington community and emergency responders bowed their heads to reflect on the tragic World Trade Center attacks that shocked the country 12 years ago.

New York Army National Guard Col. Glenn Marchi was on-hand at the ceremony to present the Village with a 9/11 'Remembrance Flag.'

"It's a flag of honor, a flag of reflection and it stands for all of us uniting this nation," he said.

Irvington Trustee Constance Kehoe opened up the somber riverfront ceremony, while Rabbi Joan Farber provided an invocation for attendees.

Irvington Police Department Chief Michael Cerone and Lt. Michael Morano—with the help of Irvington Volunteer Ambulance Corps Captain Ellen Lewit and Irvington Fire Department Chief James Ruffler—placed a wreath in front of the Twin Towers memorial during the ceremony.

Five Irvington High School musicians—Ruby Bernstein, Myles Novick, Grace Schelp, Max Rosen and Lucas Maciel played taps.

The morning event ended with a benediction from Reverend Robert Ashman, who said, "May we be the people we were on 9/12."
