“Very excited to be singing at Citi Field,” said Springhurst Elementary School’s music teacher, George Swietlicki. “Our goal was to sing in three-part harmony a capella. We have had a long relationship with the Mets since 1989. After 9/11 it was a challenge to keep an active travel season, so we took a long break. The last time we sang there was 2006.”

The 10 and 11-year-old Springhurst Elementary students, who make up the “The Harmonaires,” have been in the musical group led by Swietlicki since the fourth grade.

Swietlicki said students were challenged when preparing for this performance by learning to effectively deal with the echo on the field.

“I know that even professionals, who thought they need not address the echo issue, have been so challenged by this echo, that by hearing it as they are singing, have slowed themselves down to a point of a ‘standstill,’” said Swietlicki. “We have addressed this issue, practiced it, overcame it and are ready to give a stellar performance. What a wonderful opportunity to test our skills!”

The Harmonaires will serenade the stadium on Thursday, April 4 when the New York Mets play against the San Diego Padres at 1:10 p.m. The game can be viewed on SNY and MLBN and heard on WFAN 660.
