St. Christopher’s Inc., a local organization dedicated to helping children with special needs and their families by delivering a seamless continuum of care has just been selected this year’s recipient of the Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award. This award goes to a high school boys varsity basketball team and head coach in Westchester County that have demonstrated hard work, fair play, cohesiveness, team spirit, and sportsmanship.
On behalf of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) Westchester County Board 52 the Clark Academy Varsity Basketball Team, and Head Coach Anthony Gaines are being recognized.
This award along with a banner will be presented to the team, head coach and athletic director during the half time of the Section I Class AA Finals to be held (tentatively at 12 noon) Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the County Center, White Plains, New York and the team will be playing for the Section Title on Friday.
In 2002, the IAABO Westchester County Board 52 decided to create a sportsmanship award in honor of Dennis Hurlie, who is a former president of the board, a dedicated member for over 37 years, and a familiar sight at Section I boys’ basketball games. He exemplified the ideals of the association by promoting respect for the game, maintaining the highest standards of basketball officiating and, most important, encouraging fair play and sportsmanship.
