Pets Alive Works with Mid-Hudson Animal Aid to Rescue 50+ Cats

Animal Rescues join forces to save over 50 cats from hoarding situation.

On March 9, 2013 staff and volunteers from Pets Alive Animal Sanctuary and Mid Hudson Animal Aid were in Maybrook, NY rescuing over 50 cats.

Earlier in the week, Pets Alive and Mid Hudson Animal Aid both received phone calls that an elderly woman had been hospitalized and there were over 50 cats in and around her home, on the property and in the street. Luckily, experienced staff and volunteers from both organizations were able to quickly trap the cats as they responded to the lure of food in the trap. By noon that day, the organizations had trapped close to 35 cats.

Both organizations have helped with rescues before, and both have seen animals in deplorable conditions, but what makes this rescue different is that rather than one organization being buried under the pressure and financial expense of dealing with such a major issue, the two worked side by side to save these lives - splitting costs, time, care and responsibilities.

“The folks at Mid Hudson Animal Aid were wonderful with the cats, whether aggressive or terrified, young or old, they know how to handle and help them. Pets Alive has helped in many mass rescues over the years and we were able to use our experience and resources to also help the cats in this situation,” said Kerry Clair, Pets Alive Executive Director.

Many of the cats will need advanced medical care.  A number of cats had wounds and injuries, as well as infections and respiratory illnesses. Some of the cats are also pregnant or had recently given birth. Both organizations will be working with these cats for a long time to ensure that they all are brought back to health and provided with the love and care they deserve.

To add some levity to the situation, all of the cats were named after breakfast foods! You can go and meet Pancake, Links, Grits and Donut! Many of the cats need socialization help.  Pet Alive and MHAA are looking for kind and loving foster homes to help the semi-feral or extra shy cats come out of their shells!  If you have some love and compassion to spare please contact either organization to offer your help.

All the cats are safe now. All have food and their medical needs are being met.  Most of all they will have the love and care they need, and soon will go into their forever homes.  Anyone that can open their homes as a foster, or adopter, please contact Pets Alive (http://petsalive.org) or MHAA (http://www.midhudsonanimalaid.org/)
