Cops: Man Stole Cigarettes, Fled in Stolen Car in Irvington

The Poughkeepsie resident led police on a chase down Main Street, police said.

A man was chased down Main Street by the Shell gas station clerk, and then by police, after he allegedly stole a carton of cigarettes worth $108, officials said.

The Irvington Police Department said the alleged larceny then chase took place at about 7:55 p.m. on October 7.

After he took the cigarettes, the gas station's clerk chased the man west on Main Street, according to police.

Brian W. Kennedy of Poughkeepsie then got into a 2010 Toyota Sienna and led police on a chase down Main Street to the train station, "where he ultimately bailed out of the car," according to Police Sgt. Michael Foley.

"The car rolled into the wall between the road and the river," Foley continued.

Kennedy, who was uninjured after bailing out, was then pursued on foot by police, where he was ultimately arrested behind a Bridge Street storage facility.

He was then taken to police headquarters and charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree after police discovered the Sienna had been reported stolen out of Poughkeepsie two days earlier.

Following an arraignment, Kennedy was remanded to Westchester County Jail without bail, as police discovered he had more than two prior felony convictions.

The Sienna suffered front-end damage as a result of the incident, totaling $2,805.30, police said.

Kennedy was due to appear in court this week. According to jail records, he is now charged with:

  • Petty Larceny
  • Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree
  • Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree
  • Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the Second Degree
  • Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the Third Degree
  • Reckless Driving
He remains incarcerated without bail and is due back in Village Court on November 4.

Note: Arrests do not indicate convictions.
