Irvington Business Reports Attempted Con Ed Scam

Police say not to believe unidentified callers who demand payment for electric bills via phone.

A person posing as a Con Edison employee attempted to scam a village business into forking over funds, according to an Irvington Police Department.

Police reporting receiving a report on July 24 from a merchant who said a caller claimed to be from Con Edison's disconnection department.

The caller, according to Police Det. Sgt. Michael Foley, said, the business was late in paying its bill and said the power would be turned off if approximately $75 wasn't paid within the hour.

The merchant was given a number to call and provide payment information, according to Foley.

Luckily, "This merchant did not send any money," he said. "He wasn't persuaded."

Foley said this scam has been reported around Westchester and Rockland counties.

The Irvington case remains under investigation.
