Pipe Struck During Irvington River Road Construction

A propane pipe was struck Thursday as crews continue to work on River Road in Irvington, according to fire officials.

The Irvington Fire Department was called to the scene—on the street leading to Scenic Hudson Park—at approximately 11:30 a.m. after a frond-end loader construction vehicle hit and broke the pipe.

Workers in the area reportedly were able to smell the gas and notified the village.

A Fire Department member said the pipe is privately-owned and its source was shut off immediately after the accident.

That road appears to have been mostly dug up and is operating as a one-way street this week as the work continues.

A repair company was notified of the accident. Fire responders left the scene after about 20 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Village Mayor Brian Smith wrote in his latest July 26 update that residents should avoid the construction area while work is underway if possible.

"If you’re visiting one of the restaurants over the weekend, consider parking in the north lot at Bridge Street Properties or even at the train station," he said, noting, I realize this is an inconvenience, but it is a very important project. I’m sure we will all be pleased with the results once the project is completely finished in about 3 weeks or so."
