Find Out About DPW Consolidation Tonight in Dobbs Ferry, Hastings

The meetings will run sequentially starting at 6PM so people can go to both.

Residents of Dobbs Ferry and Hastings-on-Hudson have a chance this evening to talk to each other and listen to the consultants and officials who are exploring consolidation of the two villages' public works departments.

Consolidating will save money, and the consultants say it can be done without materially affecting the services—garbage pickup, recycling, snowplowing, road paving, sewer and water main maintenance etc. Some residents are all for it, others are iffy.

That's because though study after study of New York's multiple layers of government has shown that consolidation of services is the way to save taxpayer money, residents hold to their local services including schools.

Hastings residents were no different in a survey done this winter by village officials. One resident's comment: "As much as I support sharing services to make things more efficient and less expensive, I do like having services provided by MY town, in MY town. There's something nice about saying how great Hastings is. I don't know if I'll feel the same way if I have to say how great "Hastings/Dobbs" is."

The Dobbs Ferry meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Village Hall. The Hastings meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at the James Harmon Community Center.
