Hastings to Move Forward with Deer Sterilization Study

Village looks to bait, catch deer and inject them with immune-contraceptives.

Following a "successful" meeting with the state's Fish and Wildlife division, Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski is feeling optimistic about the longtime proposal to inject village deer with a form of birth control.

He wrote in an update, "...it now seems clear we’re actually going to get a permit to carry out our deer immunocontraception study. This was never a given—but now it looks very likely that we will get the green light to move ahead."

This go-ahead, he continued, means the village will be able "to use bait to draw deer and drop-nets to catch them, which should greatly increase the number of deer we’re likely to be able to hit with immune-contraceptives."

Wrote Swiderski, "Over the next few weeks, we’ll begin to ramp up our volunteer effort. This will be very exciting."
