Irvington Recognizes 'Humble' Civilian Hero

Jack Degnan risked his life to aid a Mercy College student who had fallen onto the train tracks in February, Mayor Brian C. Smith said.

Irvington's Jack Degnan is "the most humble guy I know," Mayor Brian C. Smith shared Monday evening.

Degnan was on-hand at the village's Board of Trustees meeting for a special award and recognition after Smith said he risked his own life to aid a Mercy College student who had fallen onto the Ardsley train tracks on February 27.

"He's the kind of person that never calls attention to himself," Smith said.

In true form, Degnan declined to speak after humbly accepting a proclamation from the Mayor that named July 15 "Jack Degnan Day" in the village.

"We'd all like to thinks we would do similar heroic acts, but I am not convinced we would," said Smith.
