Rabbi Mark's Blog: Save Reynolds Field (XI)

MY GLASS HOUSE

I live in a glass house.

OK... it's not 100% glass.

OK... it's not even mostly made of glass.

But it has glass windows?!

That's the argument being made about the Geo-Turf Field.

"Geo Turf Field is natural, proven safe and environmentally sound, made from coconut husks and cork" declared the local pro Geo Turf FB page on September 16. But that's like me saying my house is made of glass. Left out was the fact that a Geo-Turf Field itself is made with polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyurethane - in other words, plastic.

With the vote just weeks away, folks are even now in the dark about this.

Less than 24 hours ago, a Hastings student posted this:

"People who object to the new artificial turf at Reynold's Field call it plastic or rubber. I understand that the material used on this product is a combination of cork and corn husk. Do I have wrong information?"
Yes, sadly, she does.

GOOD PEOPLE CAN DISAGREE

Good people can disagree, and that's what's going on here in Hastings. Good people are disagreeing. But good people disagree much less when they have the facts in front of them, and right now many here just don't.

Geo Turf had a responsibility to be much more forthcoming. Much.

But now that the facts are coming to light, I expect even more folks will want to take a step back, take a breath, and VOTE NO on October 22.

And then let's regroup as one community to plan a revised Reynolds Field that works for us all.
