Facing Declining Enrollment, Irvington Schools Analyze Facilities Use

The Board of Education rejected the possibility of moving fourth and fifth grade classes to Dows Lane.

"Are there options to the current practice that might provide more efficient ways or patterns to organize how the kindergarten through grade twelve program is implemented/delivered over the next three years?"

That is the question a study conducted by consultant SES Study Time addresses for the Irvington Union Free School District.

The results of the 48-page study were discussed during the district's June 4 Board of Education meeting and again on June 18.

According to the June 18 meeting recap, Superintendent Dr. Kristopher Harrison and SES' Dr. Paul Seversky both noted the uncertainty of the enrollment projections named in the study.

The document asserts:
  • "K-5 enrollments may likely decrease up to about 60 pupils over the next five years.
  • 6-8 enrollments may likely decrease up to about 30 pupils over the next five years.
  • 9-12 enrollments may likely decrease up to 85 pupils over the next five years."
The study analyzes possible ways to utilize the district's spacial resources as enrollment continues to drop over the next several years, offering eight different options.

According to the June 18 recap, "All BOE members agreed that it was not desirable to analyze moving 4th and 5th grades to Dows Lane because of the need to do substantial and expensive structural improvements to accommodate two grades."

However, board members did ask administrators to look into moving fourth grade classes to Dows Lane and fifth grade classes to the middle school.

Coming up, the board has asked the administration "explore approximately four scenarios while considering programmatic impacts and cost factors."
