Irvington Health-ifies School Lunch Offerings

Come September, Irvington students will choose from more "nutritious" options, according to the district.

Fresh produce, a bigger salad bar and no more canned fruits and vegetables are on tap for Irvington Union Free School District students come September.

"The Irvington School District is committed to providing our students with the healthiest meal options possible," Superintendent Dr. Kris Harrison said in a statement. "I believe we have made huge strides by enhancing our meals to include fresh fruits and vegetables with each meal and eliminating less nutritious offerings."

The schools will be swapping out canned fruit and vegetables for fresh only each day, adding vegetarian options, an "expanded" salad bar, yogurt parfaits, fresh bagels and SunButter.

"Additionally, those on the deli line in the secondary schools will be pleased to know that this meal option will be now be available as a regular lunch rather than at a more costly al a carte option," the district said.

Also new this year, kindergarten students will have the option of purchasing hot lunches.

Aramark will be providing food services to the district in 2013-14 and has done so since 2003.
