Patch's Weekly College Sports Roundup: Aug. 30-Sept. 2

Several college teams opened their Fall 2012 seasons the final week of August.

 

There were several college teams that opened the Fall of 2012 season , beginning in the final week of August , with the results as follows :

 

         Player of the week: TRAVIS BLAIR  ( Hastings '11)

 

This week's spotlight focuses on forward Travis Blair of Hastings , who scored the one and only goal in a two overtimes win for Whaton over Wentworth College on Sept. 1st. It came at 101.19 , as he took a thru pass and drove it into the far right corner for the victory. The record is now 2-0.

 

Lisa Tessitore and the Stevens Tech tennis team launched the Fall season on 9/1 with two matches at Nazareth College of Rochester.

They dropped their first matches with the host team , 5-4, as the Dobbs Ferry graduate took a hard fought singles match , 6-2,6-7(4-7),10-7. She and her doubles partner lost their match , 8-5. Later that day , facing Elmira , they outplayed their opposition , 8-1 , as Tessitore's doubles duo prevailed, 8-1, and the Ducks took all singles match ups .

 

Lisa Bucci of Irvington and the Salve Regina field hockey team , opened their season on 9/1 with an 8-1 victory at Wheelock  , as she had 4 shots , with 3 on goal in the game .

 

Christos Aliozos of Ardsley  and the Western Illinois football team were the first out of the gate , as they outscored guests Butler U. on August 30th , 23-15.

 

The Mercy College men's soccer squad , with Alex Redmond of Irvington seeing action , played against Bloomsburg at the Nyack College opening tourney on 8/30 , and topped their opponents , 1-0. 

 

Hobart opened the soccer season with a game at Carnegie-Mellon. Irvington and Rye Country Day School's William Abbott started at forward and saw action for 71 minutes in the 3-1 setback. 

 

Rebeccah Bortz of Dobbs Ferry and her Chapman U. soccer team hosted Whitworth on the 31st, and the sophomore former Eagle came off the bench with a bang  , as she grabbed a loose ball and found the corner of the cage at the 65:46 mark to score her team's 2nd goal unassisted in a 3-0 blanking of their guests.

 

Alexis Lorusso of Irvington and Albright's soccer eleven 's season

opener at Penn State-Berke, a 3-0 victory in which the debuter played 18 minutes off the bench for the Lions. On 9/1 , facing Montclair State at the same locale , she played in the nets for the first half, allowed both goals , and made 4 saves in the 2-0 loss.

 

Forward Nick Pastore of Hastings and the Rochester Yellow Jackets' soccer team hosted Marywood in the opening game on the 31st,

as the starting forward helped his team to dent the twine in their first goal. After a scoreless opening period , he fed a pass to a teammate in the 48th minute , who beat the Pacer goal tender. They went on to score 4 more goals in the second period, for a 5-0 win. Pastore also had 2 shots on goal.  With Fredonia on 9/2 ,they scored a one sided win , 6-0 , as Pastore started , played 36 minutes, and assisted on the 2nd goal , at the 45:31 minute mark.

 

Julian Saliani of Johns Hopkins and the cross country crew opened the season at the Baltimore Metro Tourney, with the Irvington graduate finishing 5th of 55 competitors . The Blue Jays buried the three competing teams of McDaniel , Coppin State, Hood, and Goucher with their winning total of 15 points , 54 better than second place Hood . Saliani was clocked at 16:34-40

 

In his collegiate debut , freshman Brendan Wortner of Geneseo had an auspicious debut in the  cross country meet at Buffalo State on the 31st, as his clocking of 27.48 awarded him 19th place out of 112 runners . The Blue Knights finished 5th of 9 teams with 116 points.

 

Hastings ' Mac Yumoto  and the N.Y.U. Violets ' soccer team,

hosted their opening match with New York Poly , and scored a 3-0 win over their opponents, as starting midfielder Yumoto assisted on the 2nd goal at 55:26. Hosting Brooklyn College on 9/2 , he scored his team's 2nd goal  at the 73:01 mark, and also had another shot in the 2-0 blanking of the Bridges.

 

In the opening game for Hobart , at home against Dickinson on 9/1 , Hastings ' Ali Marpet started at defensive end in the 31-0 rout of their guests.

 

Freshman starting right tackle Sean Degnan of Irvington and the Springfield College gridders opened the season with Bridgewater on 9/1, and dropped the game , 21-17. Trailing 14 zip at the half , the Pride rallied for all 17 of its points, but the foe's T.D. at 11:30 of the 4th quarter made the difference.

 

The Roanoke College Field Hockey team , with Devon Huddleston of

Irvington and Hackley playing , opened their season on 9/1 one as  they lost to hosts McDaniel College , 3-1. She was in and out of the game several times during the action . On the 2nd, at Gettysburg, she played as in the McDaniel game, with the host Rifles scoring the only goal of the game in the first half , with the final score 1-0.

The letter does not seem to mention if they have personal experience as an educator or as a parentRead More with kids now, kids past years or kids future years in the Irvington School District. Sometimes the perspective is different if you have lived the experience with kids in the Irvington School District. I have three kids -- one graduate last year and is at Cornell University, one is grade nine and one is grade three. All three got great teachers, small class size and extra help or enrichment as needed. I think the arts programs can be expanded -- music, drama, fine arts (both in classes and electives plus stipends to pay teachers for clubs and after school activities). However, this is a school district that values having small class size and keeping strong all the academics core subjects required for graduation and college plus making a priority sports opportunities middle school through high schools at all levels and types of sports. If you are high achiever it works grades k-12; if you are a child with special education needs or learning issues needs or extra help needs it works too. The average student is the one who is often forgotten in Irvington School District since they just do their thing in school, after school activities and move from grade to grade uneventful but nothing that will be memorable at least in my experience.

When employers are offering less and less health insurance, more people are self insured orRead More uninsured and are restricted to buying policies as individuals. With the cost at over $ 1,500 per month for standard, full coverage for a family of 4, it is no wonder there are so many uninsured or partially insured ( emergency/hospital care only).
