POLL: Should the Jets Make a Play for Peyton?

If the Colts give him up, that is. A man's gotta work.

Ever since the Jets drafted Mark Sanchez fifth overall in 2009, Gang Green’s faithful fans have been waiting for the Sanchize’s talent to match his celebrity.

March 8 marks the day that Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay has to make a decision on bringing back superstar quarterback Peyton Manning, or letting him go without paying him his $28 million bonus.

Manning has dominated commercial breaks for years and his Saturday Night Livemonologue and sketches show you that he has no issues with the bright lights of the Big Apple.

Now the biggest question facing New Yorkers is, do you think the Jets should make a run at the NFL’s only four-time MVP if he becomes available?

Take the Daily Sports Digest's weekly poll and tell us why you feel that way in the comments.

I am all for Mr. Manning. Is he all better? I heard He had injury. Hope HE OK. I wonder if He could be on Giants w/his brother. Then, the Giants would be unable to be beat.

Sanchez will never have what it takes to be a Superbowl Quarterback. And Peyton would be a waste of money and time to the Jets. The Jets need to find a Quarterback that's young, healthy, big and ugly. Not like Sanchez who's chasing every girl instead of watching films.

San Diego gave up on Drew Brees after his third year. Look at what he accomplished after that. A Super Bowl and a record setting passing year. Manning is damage goods. There are no guarantees that he will be anything like what he was. Sanchez has a future.
Blue March 5, 2012 at 12:11 pm
David ,
San Diego gave up Drew Brees because he was due a lot of money and he had shoulder surgery after getting hurt during the year. It was purely a business decision. Sanchez has an average arm , below average acuracy and is still imature with his decision making. He will only go as far as the running game and defense take him. Can they win a Super Bowl with him ? Yes. Is he Drew Brees or Peyton Manning ? Never .

San Diego also already had Philip Rivers ready to take over for Brees. Rivers may have had a rough season in 2011, but he had been very good before that since taking over as the Chargers' starter.

Is Manning better then Sanchez? Yes without a doubt but i do NOT want to cripple our salary cap and give up a ransom to get a QB who can be a sack or 2 away from being on the sidelines. If he can be had at a very reasonable incentive laden contract then fine, although i truly dont want him as i dont feel he fits the type of offense that the JETS will run next year which seems to favor the running game. Remember also...Sanchez is 4-2 in the playoffs, all road wins and im not ready to give up on him just yet
Blue March 5, 2012 at 08:57 pm
Sanchez has a ceiling of maybe being Trent Dilfer from the Ravens in 2000 or McMahon with the Bears in 85. A decent QB who may win one Superbowl if all the stars align with the defense and running game but I think that opportunity may have passed already losing to the Steelers two seasons ago in the AFC championship game. Is Manning the answer ? Maybe not but I don't think its going to take much to get him for 1-2 years. Al Davis is dead so there goes his only shot at a 5 year deal. LOL
Mark Rinaldi March 6, 2012 at 01:43 pm
Blue, I don't think we know Sanchez's ceiling yet. Remember how bad Eli was in his first three years? Rodgers was still a bench warmer. Steve Young and Brett Favre were on their second teams. Kurt Warner... Matt Hasselbeck... Waren Moon...and countless others were all chewed up and spit out by the NFL a time or two before finally evolving into something bigger.
But Sanchez has proved that he is not a good enough quarterback to win the Jets the Super Bowl RIGHT NOW, and Manning is. If the Jets can get the defense and running game to where they need to be then I think it would be wise to take a look at Peyton, if not then it would be smart to bring in some sort of competition to push Sanchez. Orton? Flynn? Moore? Anyone is better then the AARP's Mark Brunnell. Personally I dont think Peyton would want to play outside in the cold, against Tom Brady twice a year, for Rex Ryan, in the same city as Eli, or for a run happy OC in Tony Sporano... But its fun to wonder "What if?" Right?

Sanchez is a clown. He's not serious about playing. He sits on the sidelines and eats hot dogs when he should be going over plays and studying the opponent. He's a lazy California dope who got lucky his first couple of seasons. When will the Jets realize you just can't bring in a quarterback and a Super Bowl ring will result? To switch sports, the Knicks thought by signing one dude named Patrick Ewing that they would win everything. How many NBA titles did they get? That's right. Zero. Manning obviously would be better than Sanchez but I doubt he would really care about winning that much. Plus, Manning would never fit in with the Jets' atmosphere. They would resent him. The Jets are a joke because they think they can buy a Super Bowl victory without having to work for it. They're a joke because their coach is a joke. If they're serious, dump the Fat Man and his entire coaching staff, dump the California Dope, dump Sanjokio Holmes, tell Revis to shut up, and go and find serious people to build a team.

Mark I agree that his ceiling could be a superbowl win but when you look at him he doesn't have the ability to make those around him better like elite qbs do. Even as bad as Eli looked early on it wasn't his team it was Tiki's and Strahan's team. Every QB has growing pains but the hall of famers show u glimpses of potential greatness. Ernie Acorsi said they chose Eli of Rivers because at Old Miss he made everyone on his Old Miss teams better. He carried them. Now he's a veteran and he carries the Giants especially his recievers. Sanchez was the product of a great USC team , best QB available in the draft and now all he's perfected is the 2 minute drill when teams play soft. I don't see anything that special. He's got the arm of Chad Pennington and the judgement of Tony Romo
Mark Rinaldi March 7, 2012 at 01:37 am
Blue I like that line about Sanchez having the arm of Chad and the judgement of Tony, but may I add the eye sight of Vinny Testaverde? After 15 yards down field neither one of them could figure out the color of the jersey down field, so they would heave it up there anyway and hope for the best.
Sanchez can be something good, but he needs someone to push him. It sounds like the Jets are looking at Jason Campbell right now, and the competition could make Mark grow up REAL fast.
Mike Sabini March 9, 2012 at 04:20 am
He's probably not going to the Jets anyway so it's moot but as Jets fan I am torn.
In one sense of course I would LOVE Peyton Manning on the Jets, who wouldn't. I wish he would've came out after his junior year when we had the No. 1 pick way back when. On the other hand, is he going to be healthy? That's the $64,000 question. And despite his poor year (Don't care what his stats were, we all know he regressed), I actually like Sanchez a lot, he's my favorite Jet. If they can improve things around him, most notably the line, I think Sanchez will be fine. I mean he has won four road playoff games, including two against Manning and Brady on the road. But after saying that, if you have a chance, even if it's a small one, you have to look into getting Manning. Whatever the case is, I just hope he doesn't go to Miami. Anywhere else would be fine.
Mike Sabini March 9, 2012 at 04:36 am
And to add to Mark's point, and I have no idea if this is true or not, but there was also talk of Chad Henne, Tony Sparano's (Jets offensive coordinator) QB at Miami, coming in to be the back up.
Talk about making things interesting.
Mark Rinaldi March 9, 2012 at 08:06 am
I have to think that Peyton's health is worth more then $64,000 but I cant see Peyton and the "Aw Shucks" attitude playing for Rex Ryan or playing for the biggest ground and pound offensive coordinator in Tony Sparano.
I am hoping he goes to Arizona to team up with an offensive minded coach and one of the best wide receivers in the league. Seeing that combo for the next three years would be fun.
Johnny Girolamo March 9, 2012 at 02:38 pm
I remember when Peyton shunned the Jets by staying an extra year in college NOT to be drafted...How about the Favre debacle?? Give Sanchez one more chance under the new O coordinator..
Mark Rinaldi March 9, 2012 at 02:44 pm
John if you remember correctly Peyton "shunned" the Jets to stay an extra year because Bill Parcells refused to guarantee the Manning family that Peyton would go first.
Can you really argue that the NFL's ONLY four time M.V.P. didnt make the right choice for himself in that instant?
