Thoughts on adjustment to school for parents of young children.

Starting school/group experiences, adjusting to a new
environment and separating from the most important
people in your life is a significant event for parent and
child.
I believe that it requires courage, guidance, patience and practice.  Some parents and children may find it
stressful.   It can be helpful to keep in mind that young children express their emotions in a physical way.  Some children may express their emotions in the new environment whilst others convey their feelings at home.  Their language skills are developing and it is often through observing their behavior that we can discover what they might be feeling.  Quoting author, Nancy Balban "Children tell us through their behavior that they need our help, that their feelings are too overwhelming to manage alone."
Parents can support their young child through the process by developing a consistent routine associated with the new experience.  Keep it simple, take your time and be patient with yourself and your child as you both learn something new!
