The Bedford Katonah Patch had written a fabulous about when we first opened, and many of you have donated or shopped here. For those who have not heard of us yet, I want to write a little bit of a back story.
After losing my job of 20 years on Wall Street, I re-thunk my options and envisioned what is now "The Benefit Shop". It is a charity that re-sells other people's stuff, and all proceeds go to charities in our community—to date those include Northern Westchester Hospital, The Mount Kisco Boys and GIrls Club, Cerebral Palsey of Northern Westchester, The Mount Kisco Child Care and Senior Center, Open Door Clinic, Neighbor's Link, The SPCA, Pets Alive, Dogs in Danger, the Westchester Land Trust among others.
I love this venture where everybody "benefits". Everyone who donates knows their family heirlooms are living on to create new family heirlooms, tax forms are given, and shoppers find fabulous treasures, throughout the 6000 square feet, at you-wouldn't-believe-how-low prices.
We get new stuff everyday, and the turnover is very fast. We have many frequent fliers to the shop, and have recieved donations from Pound Ridge to Park Avenue.
We have troves and troves of trinkets and treasures, brought in by the truckload. We have antique furniture, barely used upholstered furniture, modern, vintage, asian, european, and eclectic tastes and styles. We have dining tables, dressers, chairs, coffee tables, book shelves, entertaincenters, wardrobes, china cabinets.......and everything that goes in them or on them. We have clothing crystal, china, glassware, dishes, lamps, art, carpets, jewelry, accessories, linens, pottery, collectibles, and more and more.
And today we served breakfast!
We had over 50 guests come in this morning with heads-a-swivel, eyes a-popping, and tongues a-wagging. They had not been here before, and were overwhelmed by the treasures in every nook and cranny, spread throughout five rooms.
Among those here for the first time, was Bill Demarest, from Patch, who told me about the ability to blog on the site.
So here it is, my first pro-active reach into the community via Patch. I will continue to share stories about our pieces and the families from which they come. Look for pictures, too. You all can also follow us on Facebook at The Benefit Shop.
