Assemblyman Abinanti Addresses Pothole Problems

After a winter season where roads have been ravaged, Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D-Greenburgh/Mt. Pleasant) has taken concrete steps to address potholes on State roads.

Abinanti, who personally lost two tires due to potholes on State roads, first called on the New York State Department of Transportation to implement an emergency pothole repair program in Westchester County. He argued that potholes have become a health and safety issue due to drivers weaving through traffic to avoid them. Click HERE to read more.

Seeing the need for a more modern method of reporting and checking the repair status of potholes, Abinanti then introduced legislation that creates a statewide interactive website to report potholes, check the status of their repair and view on a map where reported potholes are located. Finally, after discovering a loophole in State law, Abinanti proposed legislation that would make the State liable for pothole damages on State roads during the winter months. Current law does not allow drivers to collect pothole damages from the State from November 15th to May 1st – when potholes are at their worst. The New York Times extensively reported on this which can be read HERE.
