Today: Chris Smither Plays in Dobbs Ferry

The songwriter will perform at Common Ground Concerts Saturday night.

Musician Chris Smither will take his talents to Dobbs Ferry on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. when he is slated to perform in concert at the Common Ground Concerts.

Smither is considered an American original -- a profound songwriter who draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and philosophers.  In concert, he'll perform songs from his newest CD, Hundred Dollar Valentine, and treasures from his lengthy career.

Hundred Dollar Valentine is Smither’s 12th studio record, and has been well received. It “sports the unmistakable sound which has become his trademark, whether on record or live on stage: fingerpicked acoustic guitar and evocative sonic textures meshed with spare, brilliant songs, delivered in a bone-wise, hard-won voice.”

National Public Radio had the following to say about the musician:

"[Smither] taps his foot to keep the rhythm, much like the late blues legend John Lee Hooker.  His finger-picked guitar lines are sleek, unhurried and insistent.  And then there's the voice -- equal parts gravel and molasses, Smither's singing sounds like a distillation of the folk and blues heroes he grew up listening to in New Orleans."
