The following letter was submitted by Irvington resident Renee Petro. (Vote in our poll at the bottom of the letter.)
Irvington's Renee Petro, who has children in grades 2, 8 and 12, submitted the following letter urging parents to come to the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 6 to urge trustees not to cut foreign language instruction for fifth and sixth graders: The interim Irvington superintendent’s 2012-13 budget has proposed the following: ELIMINATING 5th and 6th grade Spanish and French instruction; and at grades 9-12 imposing significant cuts to the Spanish and French course offerings plus larger class sizes for many of these subjects. If the 6th grade foreign language is cut, instead of filling the time gap with academic instruction, most students will have up to two hours a day of a required lunch period and two study halls. Brooke Nalle is a pediatric sleep coach and the founder of Sleepy on Hudson
Each week, we're going to share with you a local mom who we think is awesome. We'll ask her some questions and hear about how she manages life with kids in our area. We hope you'll enjoy getting to know some of our neighbors. Brooke Nalle is a pediatric sleep coach and founder of Sleepy on Hudson. lives in Dobbs Ferry with her husband, Graham and their children, Alistair (almost 8), Clara (5.5), and Loewy (2.5). 1. How do you balance being a mom and working? Brooke, perhaps like many working parents, doesn't feel she does do the "balance thing" well, but on days when she does, she seeks out "the grey area and does work there - nap times, while the kids are on play dates or at activities, at night." She makes every effort to "be present …
Spice Revolution on Cedar Street will hold a spicing class on Sunday afternoon at 2; sign up now!
Writing: "Spice up your life" is such a cliche, it pains me to use it; but in this context, it's kind of unavoidable. Maybe we'll start again by saying: "Spice up your spicing repertoire." Spice Revolution—a new spice and chocolate shop on Cedar Street in Dobbs Ferry—is hosting an hour-long presentation on 15 different spices Sunday, including three types of cinnamon and variations of a few other spices. "We discuss the medicinal qualities as well as flavor profiles and tastes of all the spices, and participants will see two simple demonstrations," said store owner Lindsay Fastiggi. Everyone who takes the class will receive a spice info sheet and a tiny notebook; at the end of the workshop, everyone will get a sample of each spice to …
Even a 5 year old's plea and $2 bribe could not convince Taresa Caruso to keep Festivities open on Main Street.
On Tuesday afternoon, 5-year-old Erik Ghalib—with his mom and little brother Kai in tow—came into the soon-to-close Festivities gift shop in Hastings and confidently walked up to owner Taresa Caruso thrusting two dollar bills in her direction. "If you don't close, I'll give you two dollars," the Hillside kindergartener said. "This is my most favorite store; I love that it always changes for the holidays." Within the course of just a half hour on one weekday afternoon, many Rivertowns residents echoed Ghalib's innocent sentiment. Even Lisa Globenfeld, owner of Chelseas on Warburton, was at Festivities reaping the benefits of the 25 percent-off closing sale. "I love the merchansise here, but mostly I love the store's owner," Globenfeld said…

The power of one woman sets off a chain reaction from Africa to Boston, mobilizing many others in the race to help an 11-month-old little girl.
This is a story of luck, and this is a story of heart. This is a story of a little girl in Africa, not yet one year old, who has suffered so much already in her short life. This is the story of one woman on the other side of the world, who set off a chain reaction that moved a mountain to help that little girl. This is the story of the angels here on earth who came together—with the help of coincidence, serendipity and sheer will—to do pure good. An email heard ‘round the world In a million years, documentary filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris never imagined she’d be waiting at airport arrivals at Logan Airport in Boston for a little girl from the Congo, Africa. But just two weeks after receiving an email plea for help, that’s exactly where she …

'Ana's Comfort Tea' helps heal sore throats and clear congested sinuses.
Last week I ducked into the Black Cat Cafe in Irvington a few minutes before collecting the police blotter up the street, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eke out a single follow-up question because my throat burned as if I'd drunk paint thinner and then swallowed a lit match. I asked the woman who was working at the time if she had any herbal teas that were good for sore throats. She sad, "I have just the thing." It turns out, I was introduced to "Ana's Comfort Tea," a replica of a traditional herbal remedy from employee Ana Rusch's home country of Uruguay. "Ana's Comfort Tea" is a mixture of ginger (jengibre), chamomile (manzanilla), mint (menta), lemon ( limón) and a lot of honey (mucho de miel.) "When I was young and growing up …
