In every state where voter ID laws were passed or proposed, there has been provision for those whoRead More don't have a drivers license so they can obtain an ID at no cost. In fact, in most states, any individual can obtain an ID for general purposes. So, no-cost ID's that are acceptable for Voter ID are provision in every state. Cost is not an issue or burden for the voter. It was recently proposed that social security cards be used as voter ID's. As we all know, SS cards are FREE and every AMERICAN must have a SS number. As an aside, I would also note that in most states an adult must have identification on them at all times and must present it when asked to any officer of the law. If not able to produce ID when requested, in most states you can and will be arrested. The bottom line is that IF you are an AMERICAN then you should already have an ID that suffices to prove you are who you say you are in order to vote. If not, they are available for FREE. It is truly odd that, in a world where we must show ID for so many things, anyone would object to showing an ID to carry out their most important privilege as an American - to VOTE.
Sean Hassett April 18, 2014 at 10:54 am
Can anybody who wants to keep the electoral college intact please explain why the vote of someoneRead More from, say, South Dakota, should have more weight that a person from New York?
Big_E April 18, 2014 at 10:59 am
SS cards are not photo IDs though and currently the voter ID laws require "state issued "Read More photo IDs. And we're not talking about cost, but convenience. Do you have to go in person to get these free IDs, or can you get them by mail? Because if it's in person, M-F, 9-5 then yes, that's a burden for poor people who can't get time off to go wait in line. AND NO..most states do NOT have a law requiring you to have ID. Five do. And in almost all states, you have to be suspected of a crime to be arrested. Not having ID is not a crime. I can choose to go out without my wallet if I so choose. And, I can identify myself with a library card, or bank cashing card. Or a credit card. Or a bank check. They all have my name on them. But they are not sufficient to vote.

Either an 18 year old is an adult or not. The age for voting, army enlistment, legal drinkingRead More & smoking should be the same. This bridge is massively over priced. $14-$16 tolls. It will cost Rocklanders way more to cross theRead More bridge. Where is Nita Lowey on this? Why isn't she looking out for Rockland residents and limiting the toll. All she has done is borrowed 1 Billion dollars which we the NYS tax payer has to pay back. bibliophile March 23, 2014 at 06:24 pm
Let's stop with the euphemisms. ILLEGAL, not "undocumented" is what should be used allRead More the time. Every time this country give out "amnesty" to millions of ILLEGALS, more come illegally and those who wait on line to request entry legally get screwed. I have family living in other countries who would admit them legally since the quota for Europeans had been met here. So, pardon me if I have no sympathy. How about a Dream Act to cut tuition rates for those legally living here and who are burdened with loans, but persevere to get a degree. It took me ten years to pay off my students loans, but I did it to get a BA, MA and a MS!

Patrick, that's really dumb. Dan, the CBS article cited does not mention cameras spying onRead More passengers, despite the way this Patch article is written. License taken away, can't get to work. No income, so can't pay past due taxes. This is illogical.Read More Have these non-payers do community service or something, but to take their DL helps no one. I wonder if they can't pay because we are still in an economic depression? In a society that reliesRead More on cars, not sidewalks, taking away their ability to commute to a job is tantamount to throwing them into pauper's prison. why not just throw them in jail and be done? It's the same thing.
