The following letter was submitted by Irvington resident Renee Petro. (Vote in our poll at the bottom of the letter.)
Irvington's Renee Petro, who has children in grades 2, 8 and 12, submitted the following letter urging parents to come to the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 6 to urge trustees not to cut foreign language instruction for fifth and sixth graders: The interim Irvington superintendent’s 2012-13 budget has proposed the following: ELIMINATING 5th and 6th grade Spanish and French instruction; and at grades 9-12 imposing significant cuts to the Spanish and French course offerings plus larger class sizes for many of these subjects. If the 6th grade foreign language is cut, instead of filling the time gap with academic instruction, most students will have up to two hours a day of a required lunch period and two study halls. Irvington…
Brooke Nalle is a pediatric sleep coach and the founder of Sleepy on Hudson
Each week, we're going to share with you a local mom who we think is awesome. We'll ask her some questions and hear about how she manages life with kids in our area. We hope you'll enjoy getting to know some of our neighbors. Brooke Nalle is a pediatric sleep coach and founder of Sleepy on Hudson. lives in Dobbs Ferry with her husband, Graham and their children, Alistair (almost 8), Clara (5.5), and Loewy (2.5). 1. How do you balance being a mom and working? Brooke, perhaps like many working parents, doesn't feel she does do the "balance thing" well, but on days when she does, she seeks out "the grey area and does work there - nap times, while the kids are on play dates or at activities, at night." She makes every effort to "be present …

The power of one woman sets off a chain reaction from Africa to Boston, mobilizing many others in the race to help an 11-month-old little girl.
This is a story of luck, and this is a story of heart. This is a story of a little girl in Africa, not yet one year old, who has suffered so much already in her short life. This is the story of one woman on the other side of the world, who set off a chain reaction that moved a mountain to help that little girl. This is the story of the angels here on earth who came together—with the help of coincidence, serendipity and sheer will—to do pure good. An email heard ‘round the world In a million years, documentary filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris never imagined she’d be waiting at airport arrivals at Logan Airport in Boston for a little girl from the Congo, Africa. But just two weeks after receiving an email plea for help, that’s exactly where she …
'Ana's Comfort Tea' helps heal sore throats and clear congested sinuses.
Last week I ducked into the Black Cat Cafe in Irvington a few minutes before collecting the police blotter up the street, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eke out a single follow-up question because my throat burned as if I'd drunk paint thinner and then swallowed a lit match. I asked the woman who was working at the time if she had any herbal teas that were good for sore throats. She sad, "I have just the thing." It turns out, I was introduced to "Ana's Comfort Tea," a replica of a traditional herbal remedy from employee Ana Rusch's home country of Uruguay. "Ana's Comfort Tea" is a mixture of ginger (jengibre), chamomile (manzanilla), mint (menta), lemon ( limón) and a lot of honey (mucho de miel.) "When I was young and growing up …

Rudy is looking for a home.
From the SPCA of Westchester: This young rottie/shepherd mix is an AMAZING big boy! Rudy was rescued from a high-kill shelter recently and is eagerly awaiting his new home. He is shy the first few minutes you meet him and then warms right up into a fun loving, goofy big dog! He’d be a great addition to an active family! See here for more information about the SPCA of Westchester or call 914-941-2896 ext. 22.
It was an awfully close race, but Tarrytown/Sleepy restaurants came out on top.
It's with mixed feelings that I report that the northern Rivertowns were triumphant over the southern contingency in this competition, with little b's in Tarrytown coming out on top with 59 votes out of 197. Horseman Restaurant in Sleepy Hollow was not far behind, with 53 votes (the difference probably isn't statistically significant, but then again, the entire poll is entirely unscientific and in good fun.) Sam's Italian Restaurant led the southern Rivertowns with 32 votes. Other restaurants that got last-minute nominations included: Horsefeathers, Fleetwood Pizzeria, Slices, Half Moon and Dobbs Diner. And there were a lot of last-minute nods for Doubleday's in Dobbs. People who nominated the winner, little b's, said the small Main …

This HD movie's encore date is not yet announced.
What a pity that it is over—this spectacular production of Wagner’s 4-part opera cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen, which ended with a particularly triumphant Goetterdaemmerung. Offered live-in-HD in more than 1,600 movie houses in 54 countries, this 6-hour production caused tremendous excitement not only because of the now famed innovative “Machine,” but because of the marvelously successful cast and the phenomenal rendition by the Met’s orchestra. We lucky audience members (especially if we are “Wagnerites”) were able to savor the first two operas of the Ring in last year’s live-in-HD series. This served to whet our appetites for the culmination of the cycle this season. (In the spring two complete sets of the Ring will be performed at the…
Peter and hugs have always been a challenge.
To get a hug from pre-teen boys is always a challenge, especially when you are the Mom. Most Moms miss those hugs from babyhood. For me, a hug from my son, Peter, is always extra precious. Even when Peter was a baby he actually recoiled from hugs. You could see his discomfort. I was constantly trying to figure out a different way to hold him to make him more comfortable. When he was a little older I would let him find a position on my shoulder and follow his lead. Family members always wondered why he ran away from hugs when the other children ran toward family members with open arms. Peter was finally diagnosed with PDD-NOS, an autistic spectrum disorder, and sensory issues. We learned that hugs actually hurt him. A stronger hug was more…

Sometimes parents have a hard time stepping back and letting their child become an adult. When it comes to your child’s job, you must do just that.
I received a call last week that went like this: Caller: “Hi, are you the person I would speak to about internships?” Me: “Yes.” Caller: “Great, my son is senior at xxx high school and he is looking for an internship at your company.” Me: “I am going to share with you two things that I hope you will find helpful. First, unfortunately I do not have any internships available. Second, your son should be making these calls.” She was offended. Oh well. As a mom, I certainly understand the impulse to intervene and ask your child’s employer questions that he or she may not know to ask or feel comfortable asking. However, if your child is old enough to apply for a job, go on an interview and get hired, he or she can and should handle all issues…
We took your nominations and made a poll. Please vote before Modnday, when the results will be revealed.
We collected nominations for your favorite family-friendly restaurants in the River Villages and created a poll. Is your top pick not an option? Add it in the comments section (yes, write-in ballots can still win...look at Lisa Murkowski).
