Village and School tax rates have been adopted.
The Hastings Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to adopt a budget of 1.3 percent over last year's budget. This represents approximately a $64.35 increase over the current fiscal year's taxes for the average household in Hastings. According to Mayor Swiderski: As a point of reference, your village tax (on average a little over $4,000) is approximately 21 percent of the total property tax bill that you pay as a resident of Hastings-on-Hudson. School taxes comprises 66%, County taxes 11% and Greenburgh town taxes rounds it off at 2%. Each of these four tax entities are managed and overseen separately by different boards. Our responsibility as the Board of Trustees of the Village is to oversee the operations and services that are provided by …

Monday's feature is on two special bagel concoctions made in Hastings. For the rest of the week, our features will focus on Valentine's Day. Have an idea for a V-day snippet?
According to Esperanza Cecilio, who's worked at Hastings Own Bagel on Main Street for 6 years, the "Everything" and "Bad Boy" bagels are hands-down, the best sellers. The "Everything bagel" is pretty standard; you know, it has...everything: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, onions and salt. (And that's not even counting the spreads, or schmears—as they should really be called in a bagel shop.) But the "Bad Boy" is definitely Hastings' Own— "That one is similar to the everything, but it's an egg bagel with onion and poppy seeds," Cecilio said. Both sell out quickly. All bagels at the little corner shop are made fresh daily. "My favorite is cinnamon raisin," she said. Let's face it: all other bagels pale in comparison to NY bagels, so …

Despite their goal to end "rubber stamp elections" in the village, Hastings Republicans were unable to find a party representative Tuesday to run for the village board.
Like in almost every every other Hastings Village election for the last 10 years, the GOP line will be blank on ballots for the village board of trustees race in March. About 10 members of the Hastings Republican Party met Tuesday night in the Community Center to discuss their goals for the village and concerns about how it's currently run. But despite Committee Chair Tim Hays' mantra of "no more rubber stamp elections in Hastings," nobody in attendance was willing to step up and run for one of the two seats that will become open on the village board in March. "It's frustrating as the chairman of the committee not to have a candidate year after year," Hays said. "Last year, when I was working as an elections inspector for the uncontested …

Today's feature is author-signed Caldecott Medal Winners at Galapagos Books in Hastings. Have an idea for a Rivertowns Biz Snippet? Post it as an announcement!
Amanda Abad, owner of Galapagos Books in Hastings, is particularly proud of her selection of Caldecott Medal-Winning children's books—especially those signed by local authors. Every December Abad holds an event in which the authors—like Croton's Jerry Pinkney, Hastings' Ed Young and Peter Sis—come to the small book store and sign their works. Then, for the rest of the year, she has signed books, which make great birthday and holiday gifts. Caldecott Winners are books recognized for their stellar illustrations, and Abad thinks it's amazing to live in an area in which there are so many well-known authors and illustrators. Stay tuned for our next 'snippet' tomorrow at noon. Have an idea for a Rivertowns business snippet? Submit it as an …

The Hastings Democrats and Republicans will determine candidates this week for the March village elections.
On March 20, Hastings residents will vote to determine who will serve as village trustees, filling the two open seats currently held by Democrats Nicola Armacost and Jeremiah Quinlan. Trustee Quinlan has already said he will not seek re-election. Armacost does hope to defend her seat. Since her election to the board two years ago, she has been most instrumental in managing the village budget. The Hastings Democrats will have their caucus tonight, Jan. 30, in the Orr Room of the Hastings Public Library Library beginning at 7 p.m The Republicans will have theirs on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the James Harmon Community Center. Residents question DEC and Department of Health officials about air and water quality and flooding as waterfront cleanup plan gets underway.
Having been exposed to epic novels and films like A Civil Action and Erin Brockovitch, it's no wonder the majority of Hastings residents' questions and comments for NY Departments of Conservation and Health officials Thursday night focused on the safety associated with oil company BP/Arco's impending cleanup of its highly-toxic portion of the village's waterfront. DEC officials William Ports, George Heitzman and Michael Knipfing presented the amended remediation plan for both the land and off-shore sites of the waterfront area, and Nate Walz, of the State Department of Health, presented the health-hazard mitigation plan. All accepted questions about their recommended cleanup plan at the end. "We need to be explained very clearly how air …
