Dobbs Ferry Teacher Brings History To Life

Springhurst 4th grade teacher Julie Campbell was recently granted the award for "Outstanding Elementary Social Studies Teacher" by the Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley Council.

Social studies is often overlooked at the elementary level—especially with such a strong emphasis on math and reading with the looming pressure of state testing— But not for Springhurst teacher Julie Campbell, who was just granted the "Outstanding Elementary Social Studies Teacher" award by the Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley Council.  Campbell, who's taught in Dobbs for eight years, has a passion for history, and she's always incorporated that appreciation of past events through storytelling and interactive activities. "The fourth-grade curriculum focuses on New York history," Campbell explained. "So we start with people crossing the land-bridge from Russia to Alaska and how settlers moved south. Dobbs Ferry PTSA to Host Film Screening, Discussion on Eating Disorders Thursday

Parents hope to combat the increasing issue of anorexia and bulimia among pre-teens and teens and teach

Eating disorders—especially anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder—have become an increasing issue among teenagers, mostly girls but some boys as well.  The Dobbs Ferry PTSA is hosting a seminar on Nutrition, Body Image and Eating Disorders along with a free screening of the documentary "Someday Melissa" on Thursday April 26th at 7 p.m. in the Springhurst Cafeteria. A Q&A session will follow.   Parents from all four Rivertowns are welcome. See a clip from the film above.

Springhurst Kids Perform at NYC Met Life Building

Springhurst Chorus takes on Manhattan.

The Springhurst School Chorus—under the direction of George Swietlicki—gave a standing room only performance at the Met Life building in Mid-town Manhattan on Wednesday, Dec. 14.   In addition to performing some Holiday favorites, they also sang The Hudson River Suite, the music for which was composed by Mr. Swietlicki and the lyrics were written by Dobbs Ferry resident Laurence Holtzman. Video: Springhurst First Graders Dance Classic Holiday Ballet

Ballet Ambassadors’ "Ballet-in-a-Day" professional dancers Cierra Cotton and Andrei Kisselev teach 115 six and 7 year olds to perform "The Nutcracker Ballet."

Wielding iPhones, iPads, Androids and even real cameras, Springhurst parents swarmed the elementary school gym Wednesday to watch their kids perform in the "Nutcracker Ballet." Part of Ballet Ambassadors’ "Ballet-in-a-Day" program for elementary schools, kids were given brief workshops to learn the steps Wednesday morning and then they performed their new skills for friends, family and teachers in the afternoon. Professional dancers Cierra Cotton and Andrei Kisselev led the workshops and then directed the enthusiastic students during the show.
