White Plains Rally Puts Focus on Chamberlain, Trayvon Martin Investigations

Group gathers at County Courthouse.

A group gathered in front of the Westchester County Courthouse at around noon today to rally for justice in two cases that have gained national attention—the police shooting death of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. in White Plains and the shooting death of a teen by a neighborhood watch volunteer in February. The peaceful group hoped to bring attention to the ongoing investigations in both controversial cases. Chamberlain, 68, died on Nov. 19 after police went to his South Lexington Avenue apartment to see if there was a medical emergency. A standoff between Chamberlain and police ensued, with White Plains officers breaking down the door to the apartment and at first using non-lethal weapons on Chamberlain. The Circus Is in Town...and So Are the Protesters

Animal-rights activists will rally at the County Center this weekend to protest the Royal Hanneford Circus's treatment of animals.

The Royal Hanneford Circus transforms the Westchester County Center this weekend into a spectacular stage, showcasing tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, acrobats and animal acts. It's that last part that has animal-rights activists up in arms. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has organized a protest outside the County Center prior to Saturday’s afternoon performance to draw attention to what the group says is cruel and inhumane treatment of circus animals. "Bears, elephants, tigers, and other animals used in circuses do not voluntarily ride bicycles, stand on their heads, balance on balls, or jump through rings of fire," says PETA's website.  The group says that circus animals are forced to learn these tricks with whips, …

Irvington Police Beat October 12-20: House Painter Charged with Burglary

October 13 Marijuana Found on Manhattan Man 4:00 p.m. In conjunction with the Greenburg Drug and Alcohol Task Force, police arrested a 35-year-old man from 124th Street in New York City on criminal possession of marijuana in the fifth degree, a misdemeanor. He'd been smoking it at the Scenic Hudson Park. He was released on $60 bail and received an appearance ticket to return to court on November 1. October 17 Aid Request from Mount Pleasant 1:25 a.m. A mutual aid call came in to assist downed officers at Finnegan's Grill on 1006 Broadway Plaza in Thornwood. Irvington sent an on-duty officer to the scene. He returned to headquarters at 2:15 a.m. October 18 Damaged Mailbox 9:20 a.m. A 60-year-old resident of Riverview Road reported her …

Irvington Police Beat September 15 –21: Car Found on Blocks, Scarsdale Woman Charged with Illegal Possession of Stun Gun & 194 Bootleg DVDs

September 15 Gucci Watch & GPS Stolen from Car 8:22 a.m. A resident of Grey Rock Terrace reported someone had broken into his car, stealing his Garmin GPS unit and a men's Gucci watch. Access was gained through an unlocked door between 7 p.m. on September 14 and 6:30 a.m. on September 15. September 16 Cars Left on Cinderblocks in Nyack & Irvington 6:43 a.m. A 50-year-old resident of Greenway Drive reported finding his 2009 Honda Accord  on cinderblocks, all four wheels and rims stolen. This occurred between 9 p.m. on September 15 and 6 a.m. on September 16. During this same timeframe, two Nyack residents faced a similar fate, both Honda Accord owners. Irvington Police Beat September 8 –14: $2000 Stolen From Purse, Irvington Burglar Arrested, Sleepy Hollow Man Charged with DWI

September 10 $2000 in Property & Cash Stolen From Designer Purse 2:44 p.m. An employee of a business on 76 Main Street reported her Marc Jacobs purse stolen between 12 and 1:30 p.m. Her purse, containing a Louis Vuitton wallet, had $2K worth of property, along with credit cards, driver's license, and cash. Police are investigating this matter. September 12 Sleepy Hollow Man Charged With DWI 8:00 p.m. While on patrol, Officer Seman pulled over the driver of a 1999 Chrysler 300 for cutting through the gas station on North Broadway to avoid the traffic light. The officer pulled the 25-year-old Sleepy Hollow resident over in the municipal parking lot on Main Street and asked him to perform a breathalyzer, which he refused. He was charged with …

Dobbs Ferry Police Beat September 1 – 7: Yonkers Woman Charged with DWI, Man Charged in Money Order Theft

September 2 Windshield and Tire Slashed Causes $500 Damage 4:48 a.m. A 58-year-old Yonkers resident parked on Palisade Street reported that someone had broken his windshield on his Isuzu truck and slashed his front driver's side tire on an international truck, causing $500 in damages. This incident, criminal mischief in the forth degree, an E felony, occurred between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. September 3 Marijuana Found on Young Speeder 1:10 a.m. A 17-year-old Hastings resident was pulled over for going 46 mph on Broadway, a 25 mph zone. When pulled over, the officer noticed a green leafy substance he believed to be marijuana by the passenger side. He was issued a speeding ticket and charged with the unlawful possession of marijuana, then …
